sleeping bag

One tip an Alaskan backpacker gave me is to eat something right before going to bed to help stay warm. I nibble a little on a Probar before going to bed. I don\'t eat enough when hunting because I lose my appetite.

I get back late from a long days hunt and eat my big meal. I then pack up my gear for the next morning, refill water bottles and off to sleep.

my wife laughs at me when i sleep.

i move so much. if i have a bandaide anywhere on my body..it is a game to find out where it migrated to by morning. usually a bandaide will land on my face somewhere.

not so sure a liner will work for me.

Lark..funny story!!!!

my liner is fleece and goes on the outside. at least it had to be put on the outside since its rectangle cut and the bag is a mummy. my wife was the back country enthusiast before I met her and she pulled it out for me last year.

I have a new question. to get to the weight that I would like, the bags I have been looking at are filled with down. I have never had a down bag.... so I started looking at their care. wow! who uses a down bag? should I steer clear and get a synthetic bag?

Downs super pack able too.

I keep my down bags pretty clean. I\'ve never had an issue. There are treated downs that resist moisture.

What care step in particular Are you worried about?

This is the most I do for my down bag:
Wash it once a year at a commercial Laundromat using down detergent. Dry in large Laundromat dryer. Load the dryer with 2-3 large dry towels and 3 clean tennis balls. Take lots of quarters.

Buy a good quality down bag and not a cheap one.

Put loose feathers bag into bag. Grab the opposite side of bag to grab feather and pull it back into bag. Do not pull feathers out. This is a hit or miss. 75% of my loose feathers make it back into the bag.

Store bag loose. Not in a stuff sack. This is true for down and synthetic bags. Compression breaks the insulation which leads to the bag losing its warmth. Down is more resilient to this.

Bag liners do these 2 things:
Keeps the down bag cleaner
Provides another 5-10 degrees of warmth

I wear clothes to avoid using a bag liner.

This may help with your decision.

thanks. mutt I read that on rei. I have been checking on so many bags..... I think I have my mind made up on the kelty ignite 0 degree bag. it does have the dridown fill. my main reason to get a new bag is to reduce the weight of my pack. my wifes bag that I have been using is synthetic and weighs 5#8ozs. if I am going to spend $200 on bag that weighs that, why not spend $250 and get one that weighs 2lbs lighter and packs smaller? that leaves more room for the vodka :D I tried a kelty ignite 20 degree bag up at rei the other night and was blown away at how light and compactible it was. I am too worried that it wouldn\'t be warm enough.... so I will tack on 11 more ozs and get the 0 degree.
some sites made it sound sacrilegious to wash your bag and that you better be clean and have clean clothes on and don\'t sweat, use a liner, etc..... to point that I took it as why are you even using the bag, its a work of art. I have just always rolled out the bag and slept in it. one article had you running your hand in the washer checking for burrs and cleaning out the detergent access slot and rerinsing until you have spent $100 in quarters and then singing it a lullaby as it dried  I am just wondering if I am up to that level of commitment and if the wife will get jealous that I am spending more time with it than her

I\'ll say that I don\'t really mind a liner all that much.

I think I normally get all twisted-up anyway, so a little more is not an issue. Liners are cheap, and add 10 degrees or so to the rating, in my experience. They add some bulk, though, too.

I hang my bag out in the back yard under my patio to let it air out and dry completely. Occasionally I\'ll fluff it in a cold dryer.

I just pulled the trigger on it. backcountryedge has a no questions 1 year like it or return it policy with free return shipping if I exchange it for something else from them!

LoL!

I do not baby anything that I own. Last fall, I forgot to wash my down bag, so it\'s probably dirty. Murphy\'s Law prevents me from messing with anything for camping or hunting <60 days before opening day. Therefore, I am using a dirty bag this year.

I admit, I worry about cleaning things at a Laundromat. I once had someone\'s left over bleach do a number on some clothes. Using the bathtub for the cleaning is also used by many people. Then, they drag the wet down bag off to the Laundromat for the drying.

At first, I wondered why someone from MN would need a 0 degree bag. Aren\'t all MN residents cold resistant? ;)

Because of your training for races, you likely have zero body fat. I am well endowed with some natural insulation.

Vodka: does that warm you up or make you colder? :p I say 5 degree warmer bag just for the consumption of vodka.

In all seriousness...For my Wilderness mule deer hunt, I would have welcomed having a 0 degree bag when that Winter storm came rolling in. Fortunately, a warmer sleeping pad saved me from having to buy a warmer down sleeping bag. If I had a do over, I would buy a 10 degree bag.

Good luck in your new relationship with your kelty ignite 0 degree bag.

zero body fat, I wish..... working on getting there. I have been using a 0 degree bag for the last 3 years and know what to expect. to save weight I looked at the kelty 20 degree and was not so sure that I would stay warm once I crawled in one. I checked into some 10 and 15 degree bags, but they weighed the same if not heavier than this 0 degree bag. push come to shove, I would rather have too much bag than not enough, being cold sucks..... us minnesotans get cold too :D
vodka, that\'s another story....

got the bag Thursday. I tried it out Friday night on my bed. its real comfy, in an air conditioned house  I really like the inner material, feels good against the skin. I didnt get hot until later in the night. so I am curious to see how it will do in the mtns. which incidentally is only a month away!
