I'm looking at getting a spotting scope for next year hunting for elk and whitetail here in eastern Washington. I've been very interested in the Vortex Razor HD 11-33x50. Seem light and compact but not sure if i should go up to a 60 or 85mm lens instead. What is your preference on straight and angled spotting scopes! What scope do you recommend? Please say the pros and cons of why you chose what you chose! thanks!

I will be hiking in on day hunts possible 3-day. Also I don't see my self glassing over a mile away. perhaps 1500 yards is even the limit.

go straight if possible, its hard for me to locate something in an angled scope but i know lots of people do it just fine

I like my Leupold angled. I'd rather sit upright and look down in it than prop on my elbow to see though it. I guess you could use a higher tripod, but my shorter one fits my packs.

What size is your spotting scope? Do you think the compact size and weight is worth only a 50mm lens? or should i go for a bigger one?

if your only looking 1500 yards brother just a good pair of binos should cover ya

Another reason i was wanting a spotting scope would be to get the go pro mount for it. I'd like to start filming my hunt and getting footage of the animals i see and start going after! Can you do this with Binos? Also what size bino would you recommend? thanks!

10x42 vortex is what i carry good range and i would imagine a spotting scope adapter should fit the binos the same way just using one side vs two they make a tripod adapter for the binos

I'll look into those. I want to stay with vortex optic due to there amazing warranty! And I've had nothing but great luck with their range finder.

It looks like the razor hd 11-33x50spotter is 699.
The vortex viper hd 10x42 is about 599.
The price point is about the same, just not sure what would fit my needs better?
Any other higher quality options for under $850 after tax? thanks?

i have a brunton spotter but i dont carry it on the hunt to much added weight for my liking but where i have hunted in northern Idaho has always been tight brush where a spotting scope is worthless and binos fit the hunt best. Here is my .02$ get what you need to get the hunt done and save for the extras you might could use in a different state or spot later. no one says you cant have both i am taking my spotting scope to NM this year should have more open terrain suitable for the spotter. but if i find myself looking at heavy timber areas like i like it will probably stay in the truck or base camp.

or get the D Backs and the spotting scope you really if you spec them out the difference between the vipers And Diamond Backs are not that much and you can save a bunch of money toward the spotting scope and the warranty is still the same. food for thought

Spotter is a 15-45x60 and binos are 12x42 Bruntons. Both have their place. SE Idaho the spotter works good, South Central Colorado, not so much.

I agree with cowboys...I have the 10x42 Vortex Diamondbacks and my buddy has the Viper HD's...We have compared them numerous times while in the mountains and you really are splitting hairs. The major difference(if you want to call it that, its actually pretty minimal) is that the Viper HD binos have a sharper/crisper image at long ranges, which is what you might be looking for. Like cowboys said, If you can swing the little bit extra, get the diamondback binos and the spotter. But if you are looking to buy just one, maybe the viper hd's. I don't think you'll be disappointed no matter which Vortex product you buy! Good luck and share some footage!

Just got the small Vortex spotter you are debating Micarden3.  For the way I hunt, this meets my needs.  I don't spot from a vehicle, I don't spot from a 4 wheeler. If you do, I'd go for the bigger one.  Otherwise, this is Swarovski glass in a vortex suit.

I've got the 85mm Angled Razor and it's a great scope! The only gripe I have is the weight and size of the thing. I think that the 65mm Razor would be the ideal package for the backpack hunter. I glass from the truck and off horses enough that I figured I could handle the extra weight when I'm packing in... which I can, but I still think that 65 would be the best for my style of hunting.
Just depends on where you're at, what kind of terrain you hunt, and how you like to hunt. Decide what best fits each of those categories and you should have an easy time deciding what you want.
