My oldest brother has been an alcoholic for several years. He was living in Seattle and lost his job due to drinking last October and hadn\'t done anything to get back on track. No seeking medical help, no applying for unemployment, nor looking for jobs. He would be out of money in a couple of months and on the street and probably dead. I just couldn\'t live with myself if I didn\'t try to help him.
I convinced one of my brothers to fly out there with me and drive him back home. He was living with a lady that was just using him and enabling him to drink. We were going to tell him that we were there to take him home for his birthday and we had no intention of bringing the lady back. We had a lot of help as 6 people in Seattle met us and helped us get him out.
When we arrived at 10pm he was asleep, but stumbled to the door. His legs started to buckle, and I caught him as he passed out and crumpled to the floor. He got back up and said he didn\'t have anything to drink and that he never falls. Then he passed out again and had a slight convulsion. We called the ambulance and he was admitted to the ER. His blood alcohol was at 235. The lady he was with wanted $2,000 from us to leave - that didn\'t work out well. At one point she grabbed one of my brother\'s handguns and was waving it around. We offered her $80 for a hotel and she left - not even asking about my brother once.
We loaded up his Chevy diesel with all the heavy stuff and then his 28\' boat with the rest of what we could pack. The Seattle people would clean up his rental and help close out affairs there. My brother and I drove and picked him up at the hospital and drove 24hrs strait back to Denver, where he is staying with our parents. I got him Medicaid last week and my Dr said she would take him and we have an appointment next Monday.
We put him in Detox tonight, and were able to book a rehab center for this Friday. They will assess him and get his outpatient program started. Hopefully he can get back to himself, but he has a lot of healing as his biological dad was an ass - abusing my brothers (he apparently got the worst since he was the oldest) both physically and mentally. He never wanted to admit that he needed help - he always turned to alcohol. I just needed to vent a bit, but hopefully we can get him on the right path, as he is 59 and hopefully can make the best of his time.
