When I place a trail camera, it is great to get a bunch of pics.

But, I also think it is great to NOT get pics because that tells me not much game is there and that intel is very helpful.

Dont be discouraged if your cameras arent getting photos. Take the lack of information and move them!
It sure beats wasting valuable time during hunting season hunting a barren area

But dont move them too far or you could be in another barren spot!

And elk may not be there right now ... I wouldn\'t be too worried unless we\'re talking about late August.

I think they are great at building hunt anticipation and making me lose sleep.
But like John mentioned, I am not too concerned with what I see until late August!

We only use trail cameras to let us know what\'s in the area.... Only problem for the area I hunt is it\'s a travel route during the rut so I almost never get any pictures of the deer I see during hunting season... Most of the good deer I kill are the ones we never get any pictures of and the good deer we get pictures of never show up... :D :D

Finding the elk is always more than half the battle. It\'s very easy to get down on a hunt if you are not seeing elk after a few days of hunting hard. Having trail cameras up, even if it\'s just before the season and not during it, can give you the peace of mind that there are actually elk in the area. I\'ve had times during hunts where I thought there wasn\'t an elk within a 5 mile radius of where I was at, including last year. Luckily, last year I had some cameras out and they had shown some action in the area prior to our season, which helped keep me going and eventually I punched my tag. That\'s one of the positives. And if you are able to check them and move them a lot prior to the season, like Dan does, you can really piece together a solid understanding of what the elk are doing.

I really don\'t see any cons with using them IMO.
