So my old man, on a whim, recently decided to buy a bow. He has a buddy who has been into archery forever and has helped him pick everything out and set everything up over the last several weeks. He ended up with a Hoyt Nitrum and finally got his pins set the other day.

I stopped by his house yesterday and he was out shooting. He handed me the bow, showed me what to do (yes, zero experience here outside of a small compound bow I had as a kid) and I started flinging some arrows. Then a few more arrows...then a few more. MAN, that was fun, and addicting as well! Even fired a couple arrows at a rabbit, although I have to say that my skills weren\'t quite sharp enough to pull that shot off yet

All I can say is it\'s a good thing we are going through a little bit of a tough time with money or I would be out making a purchase ASAP! But that might not help...my dad was already scouring craigslist last night. With Christmas next month and my birthday a few weeks later, we\'ll see what happens. I might be joining the dark side much sooner than anticipated though! :tease:

Ruh Roh is right....

Derek,
I will give you a bow if you want to shoot it, try it out.
Its not new, but it has experience killing elk....

I appreciate the offer Brad and might take you up on that! I am going to try to get fitted at some point soon just so I can figure out what I need from a draw length perspective. Once I get that figured out, I\'ll check back with you and see what you\'ve got. Thanks again for the offer!!!

I have found bow hunting to be so much fun, that my rifles just take up space in the house. The one downside I see with archery is the ease of spending endless amounts of money. The temptation is always there, but it is not really necessary after you have the essentials. Derek, as a rifle hunter you probably have 90% of the things you need to make the conversion. The good part is that you can spend a lot more time out hunting, or is that the bad part.

Exactly!!! I already mentioned that to my wife today...let\'s just say she wasn\'t thrilled with the idea! But once my boys are old enough to go, I\'m sure that tune will change

We have you now. Like Swede said you probably have most of what you need already. I don\'t have a bow for you but have aquired quite a bit of stuff over many years of bow hunting so I could probably help you out some also.

welcome to the light side derek. you will wonder why you took so long to convert.

Okay, so I guess I over complicated things a bit. Didn\'t realize it was that easy to figure out draw length

Looks like mine should be around 30.5\". :D I feel like I am learning a foreign language!

Derek,

How tall are you?

I\'m 6\'2 and my draw length is 29\"
Make sure you get properly measured.

I\'m 6\'4\", which is exactly what my arm span is. Divide that by 2.5 and you get 30.4\". My old man has his set for 30.5\" right now and it seems to work good. I have snapped my forearm a few times, but I think that is more technique than setup.

LOL! I\'m 5\'6\" and my draw length is 29\". ( Same as long tall ridge runners like Dan ! ) The best way to find your draw length is to go to an archery shop and they should have a marked measureing arrow you can actually draw back to find your correct length.

Err on the short side. Like a 30\"

You long draw guys have all the speed anyways. Good luck. I\'ve gotten to where I\'m a bad rifle shot now. Been a long time.

Got a Hoyt Nitrum 34. I was able to shoot a few bows and this one just felt best. Maybe it\'s because that is what my dad bought and it was the first bow I shot? Pretty excited though. Got a good deal on it and it\'s basically all set to shoot, but I\'ll be making a few modifications.

Luckily my dad has a buddy who has helped him through the entire process. He used to shoot competitively and is really knowledgeable. He is going to help both of us build our own arrows at some point after the new year. We went through some of the process with him last week and it was amazing how much detail goes into it. Another steep learning curve for sure!

In the meantime, would any of you guys have a recommendation on some inexpensive arrows? I would just like to get a few on hand so I can start shooting when the bow shows up. Nothing worse than having a new toy that you can\'t use! My draw length is 31\" and it\'ll be set at 65lbs initially...
