What is your biggest hurdle for elk hunting every year?

Have you been assigned your section yet?

Not yet--usually hunters draw for sections during the orientation, right before heading out to scout. I also hear they\'re redrawing the subunit maps right now, probably to work around the fire damaged sections.

That is crazy. So there honestly isn\'t really anything you can do scouting wise until you get out there.
You\'ll make it happen though, good luck. :upthumb:

Quality scouting time and Killing an elk.

In all seriousness, I\'ve hunted elk a total of 16-20 days my entire life in the last 4 years. I\'m far from a seasoned vet at elk hunting. My first two trips were successful with friends filling their tags. Even my best friend from OK killed a net 300 bull on the third day of my second elk trip and his first. The night before I was encouraging him as he had not seen the animals I had been seeing. I\'ve enjoyed all the trips and being with my buddy when he arrowed his first bull was awesome, wouldn\'t of traded that for anything. I\'ve yet to draw my bow thus far and probably could of pushed a couple of chances with marginal ranges but did not.

I agree with others here as well on things that are hurdles including every day life duties. I work pretty hard at hunting in general as far as preparation goes, I\'m generally the guy who comes prepared and has thought through things well.

The number one monkey on my back right now is killing an elk. That hopefully ends this year and if it doesn\'t it won\'t be because I didn\'t try.

Do you have a solid plan lined up for this year?

I think my plan is more solid than last year, I had minimal time spent in the woods last September. It will be more this year for sure.

Thanks! Maybe having us draw subunits is their way of being fair. I\'m already familiar with several of the subunits, and will plan some hikes there this summer to check out other subunits. The hunt should be fun no matter what!
