What kind of socks do you wear in the mountains?

I know this is an older thread, but since its on one of my favorite topics I figured it would be a good 1st post for me. I am very passionate about all kinds of outdoor equipment and I think socks and boots are the most important. So important that if I had to chose only 2 things to survive with in almost any biome on earth I would pick a good pair of socks and a good pair of boots. I\'d figure the rest out.

My personal favorite, after using just about all of them, is the Smartwool PhD Lightweight. I have a few pairs that are over 5 yrs old and they\'re still ok for light duty. I just did a barbary sheep hunt in some rough cliffs and put on 11.5 miles in one day. I had zero blisters. There are other good socks out there, but I\'m convinced Smartwool PhD\'s are the best.

I\'ve always used liners, but after talking about these socks with you, I definitely am going to order a few pairs.
I\'ll report back with results.... they will DEFINITELY get some miles thrown at them.

Next thing I need to do is look into new boots.... my under armors are about to go through their third year and they will need to be replaced soon.

Boots are a very different piece of equipment. Since everyone\'s feet are different I can\'t really make a specific recommendation for boots. I do always recommend trying them on. You\'ll know almost right away if you have a boot that will be comfortable. Durability is the only other factor I look at when picking an expensive hunting boot. Usually an all leather boot with few seams made by a reputable company will be good. Unless I\'m carrying a water bottle and a granola bar, I stay away from any boot that is lightweight and has fabric on anything other than the upper.

I personally like Meindl Perfekt Hikers, Asolo Powermatic 200 GV, Kenetrek Hardscrabble, and Keen Liberty Ridge. Of those my favorite are the Meindl\'s. But again your feet are different. Don\'t settle for an uncomfortable boot; there are tons of options out there.

Smartwool medium hikers with no liner. Never stink and never a problem with blisters. Thankfully, I don\'t have a problem with very sweaty feet!

Smartwool with poly liners.

What I do to my feet and legs on a typical ten day hunt is horrendous. The liners have been a Godsend. :upthumb:

Two pairs for me....thin liner and smartwool.

You will never get blisters if you wear two socks as there is no friction to make hot spots.
