\"Deertick\" said:But the one larger-expense item I\'m looking for this year is a new camera. Don\'t know if I\'ll get that because I just blew my budget for it with the purchase of my new tent, that I didn\'t really need, but sure did want.

I need a scope for my .308.......
This could get potentially ugly.

What is it going to be used for? What is the price range you are hoping for?
\"cohunter14\" said:I would look at something like the Vortex Viper HST or PST in 4-16. Both have great reticles that you can use for longer shooting - figure out how many MOA your bullet drops at x distance and use the hash mark associated. Or you can use the exposed dial and \'dial up\' for your distance, your choice.
The HST is normally listed at $559 and the PST (in second focal plane) is listed at $750. However, if you do some research you can find them both for quite a bit cheaper. I got a PST for $525 at this site, but it looks like they are sold out now: http://www.eaglevalleyoutfitters.com/magnified-11-24x. Another good place to check is http://www.scopelist.com/. They have listed prices, but you can submit an offer for a scope and they will typically come back with a price that is a lot lower than their listed price. There were other sites as well that I found these scopes cheaper, I just can\'t remember which ones they were. Just use google and spend some time, you should be able to find a good deal.
As far as the difference between the two, the big reason I went with the PST is for the larger objective (4-16x50 instead of 4-16x44). The PST also has a thinner reticle, which just allows for a more precise aim. The PST also has an illuminated reticle, but I\'m not sure how much that will ever come into play or be used.
Anyway, sorry for the long-winded answer, but those would be my suggestions in your price range.

I was actually looking into the vortex and a middle priced nikons.
I will be going to the store soon to look through these optics and see their set up.
Then I will pick one and start shooting
Thanks again!

That\'s the best plan. I can tell you I have a Nikon Monarch also along with the PST and the glass on the PST is way better. I never realized what I was missing before getting the PST. I know there is better glass out there than the PST as well, but it\'s tough to beat in that price range.
