Just curious to know when everyone is planning on hitting the hills this year...?

Being a muzzleloader elk hunter I have no option. I'll hunt everyday of the hunt. I'd do the same if I was a bow hunter.

Actually, i'll be hunting for bear this year too which gives me the whole month of Septto hunt. So, i'll be out for the whole month, or until I find bear willing to donate to my freezer.

I plan to hunt all of the weekends, but plan on taking the 15th through 19th off to hunt as well. It is the week after the full moon. Don't know that it will matter though, things here are happening so early this year that the elk may be full rut by opening weekend.

Our bowhunt here for elk starts the 3rd weekend in August and ends the first week of September. So we hunt what ever is thrown at us. I wish we got the 2nd and 3rd week of Sept that would be sweet.

Ya, Utah bowhunters get the shaft bigtime.

+1 ^^.  It does just make it so we have to make the most of every minute.  You do get to the 12th if you hunt the any bull units.

I try to hunt the waxing and waning phases if I can over either a full or new moon.  The full moon, in my past experiences, has provided some great all night serenades from bulls but very little hunting opportunity as the bulls seem to be late out of bed in the evening and early to sleep in the mornings.

I have heard hunting the full moon is nice because they become restless and you get more action from them during the day. Is that not the case?

I'm gonna hunt opening week and hunt everyday after that, that I can. I try not to over think it. There is always a chance of harvesting an elk.  8)

Not to let the cat out of the bag, but in the upcoming fall issue of Extreme Elk magazine, I delve into moon phase hunting tactics.......... My favorite time is the "waning gibbous", I'll explain why in that upcoming article  ;)

Love a good Gibbous! cant wait only problem with the magazine is i read it from cover to cover once i open it.

I will be in colo the 6-13th chasing them around with stick and string...cant wait.  guess i can leave the flashlight at home ;D

I hadn't really paid that much attention to the moon phase in the past, but last year I hunted in NM and both sides of the full moon (like 2 days before and 2 days after) were on fire, but the full moon day before and after were a bust. As if someone turned off the wapiti love potion and the elk went nomadic and stealth mode. I'm fairly new (6 years) to elk hunting but that was the first dramatic moon phase response I had seen.

Then again as was posted above, I'm in Utah so we take what we can get on the early elk season.  :-\
