Who collects Pref Points?

mtnmutt, you should definitely start putting in for moose in CO now. Don\'t wait around. WIth 3 PPs +1 (weighted point) you are in the draw pool. Moose are waaay easier to kill than elk - the archery moose success ratio is almost 100%, and would be 100% except occasionally somebody holds out for a monster and doesn\'t score. But otherwise you find one, walk up and shoot him.

Rifle season is a different deal for moose since they\'re roaming a lot more, looking for cows. During the CO archery season they\'re generally where they were in August - same drainage anyway.

I collect sheep and moose points, burned my 18 elk points last year. I also have 13 pronghorn PPs that I have no idea what to do with. I have a 16\" - 80\" buck on the wall so I just want a good spot-stalk challenge for a decent buck opportunity.

Lou, where did you use up your 18 points last year? I don\'t recall seeing a recap on that hunt (or maybe I missed it). Care to share? Maybe even a new thread on it?

You mean walk up to him at my short distance of 20 yards and pray he doesn\'t charge at me? I have had close encounters with moose. I had close encounters with moose long before my close encounters with elk. I frequently saw them on my dog walks when I lived in a mountain county.

Does that mean you will sign up to be my guide and packer helper? :upthumb:

I am pulling 52# now. Shoulder tear from last year kept me from getting to 55#. I do not think I can go beyond 55# and I have 24DL. I would need a heavier arrow than my current 400 grain.

In my elk hunting area this season, I saw more moose the last week of elk season than elk. This one cow had 2 calves with her. Another hunter showed me a picture of a monster bull moose. They have not opened that unit yet to moose hunting.

Do you have a moose and pronghorn hat?

You have convinced me to get a PP. Now to find a \"friend\" who likes to carry heavy loads and flip huge animals over.

mtnmutt
Lou is right. Get those PPs started for moose.
In just 4 years you are \'in the game\' and in 5 years, there is a good chance you could easily draw a cow moose tag.

You get the tag, and there will be help. Guaranteed :)

I will absolutely remember you said that. Nothing disappears from the internet. I have it writing. Oh wait, your posts do have a habit of disappearing from the net.

Mtnmutt, if you draw Unit 7-8 I will be your guide and packer. I live there. I have to chase the moose out of the yard and away from the flowers and have a vendetta against them, so I\'d be very happy to have one less in the neighborhood.

Your draw weight is fine. Mmy friend Wayne Depperschmidt killed his bull this year with a mid-40\"s recurve. We\'ll get you a closer shot than 20 yards, and can set you up with a heavier arrow than 400 grains, with a good COC head. Not a problem. Your biggest challenge is drawing a tag. Get that, and we\'ll get you a moose relatively close to the road.

No moose hat needed - during archery season they\'re just hanging around eating and sleeping. During the rut if I were bowhunting I\'d wear a black coat and ballcap and wave an elk scapula around, or a 1/4\" plywood \"antler\". But the archery season in CO is before the rut, so pretty easy pickins unless you\'re looking for a 160+ bull.

cohunter, my partner and I hunted Unit 2. Story will be in the next issue of Bow and Arrow Hunting, coming out May 14th. We killed the two biggest bulls ever taken with trad gear in any of those NW CO units - 1-2-201-10. I can\'t really post a recap since it will be in the magazine, but look for it on the grocery store newsstand right next to Kim and Kanye.

I\'m collecting PP and BP\'s by default in at least 4 states, moose, WT and elk.

I\'d like to get a antelope and Mullie one day, all bow hunting. so I need to get a tentative plan and start collecting points, any suggestion on best place / state to begin collecting?

Thank you, Jaquomo for your generous offer. I will make a note of the units. You are crazy if you chase a moose. They can charge at you. Meaner than bears.

Mtnmutt, I encounter moose almost daily where I live (spring through fall). The only times I\'ve ever had one come after me was when I was hiking with my dog. When they\'re in the yard eating flowers and stuff, I yell at them and chase them and they always run off, looking over their shoulder. I\'m pretty careful when fishing in the willows below the house, and talk to my dog very loudly so they\'ll know I\'m coming. If I know there\'s a cow with a calf in the area I generally avoid it, unless there\'s a good hatch going on.

But I hear you about them being dangerous as all get out and deserving of respect.

Smart man. They most definitely do not like dogs and will charge if you have one, esp a cow with a calf. Fortunately, my dog stayed far away from the moose we encountered.

I have been collecting deer and elk preference points for Oregon. By the time I get enough for a real quality hunt, I will need a seeing eye dog to spot one of the critters and a Lil Rascal scooter to get close.

Would it be worth wild For a 45 year old siting on zero, to start collecting CO points for these critters?
Deer(mule), elk, antelope and moose?

Ultimately I like to get one of each with bow, but don\'t want to buy points and have to live to 80 before I could use them. I do realize there is a little luck involved but you guys have got your finger on the pulse of the point creep, way better than me.

Would another state be better for one species or another? I\'m trying not to waste money on an unrealistic or impractical tag.

I\'ve been applying LE elk for 3 years unsuccessfully, just about everywhere but CO. I need to start thinking and \"banking\" on others critters if they are remotely as difficult to get as elk. Am seriously looking into moose in Alaska in the next couple years if I can find a comparable hunting buddy.

I would say absolutely! Even if you cannot draw the top unit for elk, you could still get some pretty good areas. As far as the rest of them, you should definitely do it. You can get into some good trophy areas for deer and antelope with 3-4 preference points. And with moose, you have the potential to draw in year 4, so you never know. Doesn\'t hurt to try!

WY 3 ELK
MT 2 ELK
ND 3 DEER

Not sure what I want to do with any of them other than keep getting them..hoping for a badlands mule deer tag in my home state but that is still a ways out.
