Who is gonna use a tree stand for elk this year?

So intriguing...so many questions...

How high up so you prefer?

Do the elk allow you to move or do you still have to wait for their vision to be obstructed?

Is wind an issue or does it stay above them?

How much time do you give it when you\'re in a stand?

Here is a pic of my son and his favorite tree.
You can damn near dance up there before they see you.

More answers to your questions soon

Don, to echo Brad\'s statement, I\'ve never even seen a stand in a tree in all of my years of elk hunting. Maybe it\'s because I have only hunted rifle season, but I just don\'t think many people use them. Granted, I\'m not looking up into trees that often when I\'m hunting :D

Me! A tree stand will by my home away from home in early September.

Here is another morning from a different stand. My son was to the right about 100yds [first tree stand pic] and this cow came into our calling
She didnt go all the way to my son and my tag was already filled

I have hung a few stands in the past and even sat in them once in a while. They were over wallows which is sometimes problematic with the wind. Most were on a slope as well which added to the swirling winds. I like the idea of finding flatter ground and well used trails. Going to make this a project for this summers scouting for sure.

Thanks for the insight.

I understand elk cover way more ground I just pictured more people doing this. I see plenty of ground blinds build over water holes and wallows just, but never tree stands. This has me intrigued for sure, will have to see what kind of trees are going to be where I am headed. I usually sit some afternoons and eves to rest up after running ragged.

My first elk was shot from a treestand and so I\'m a believer ... I\'m still learning much about placement, and attracting elk to the spot, and so on ... but it is an under-used method of elk hunting for sure. Several stands will be waiting this year for my camp.

I\'m a believer too. I had about 3 -4 sits last year. Could of shot an elk on one of those sits but it was a spike.

IF and only IF I would of not been a knucklehead and left on Sunday morning, I would of shot this bull that night which was my plan before I left.

Well, after reading this thread, it sounds like a no-brainer to me. Looks like I will be buying a stand. And Brad, I will gladly borrow one of your books if it is still available.

I gotta get out and do my review on that XOP Climber for ya\'ll

Brad,

Which XOP did you buy? I am not a huge fan of climbers for whitetails but I plan on taking one with me on my elk hunt.
