If you hunted elk for the next ten years, which of the following resumes would you want and why?

1) 8 elk killed in 10 years, including 3 cows and 5 bulls. The largest bull measures 280\".
2) 2 elk killed in 10 years, both bulls. One bull is 290\" and the other is 320\".

I\'d prefer #1

It wouldn\'t matter if all 8 were cows or spikes. My freezer would be happy!!!

I\'d take 1 even if the 2 bulls were 380 and 400. I like to try for big bulls but not if it takes 5 years to kill one

Alright, so 10 answers and all 10 were for shooting more elk. So, my next question would be this:

A single cow passes by you opening morning 45 minutes into your hunt. Easily within shooting distance for whatever weapon you have and gives you a perfect broadside shot. Assuming you have an either sex tag, do you shoot? Why or why not? Does your answer change if that is a 4x4 bull?

Day one and that early? No shot on the cow.

I hunt archery which is probably a 2 week season depending on where I am.
I know the area and I know that I have the ability to see another cow later in the hunt if I pass now.

A 4x4? As a rookie hunter still.... he gets it. :mg:

well, 4 years of tag soup.... #1 for me, even though I still hesitated on that cow this year.... and my freezer is getting awfully empty...

First question: #1

Second question: shoot the cow or 4x4 on day 1 :mg: . Tag soup is bitter and after I tag my elk I can relax and help my partner. Some of the best days I had elk hunting were after I tagged out just helping my partner. The pressure is off and I don\'t have to carry my bow anymore. :D

2nd question: Assuming I have only one ES elk tag I\'d pass both the 4x4 and the cow. Why? I like the challenge of hunting for mature bulls. I would shoot a cow in the last few days of a hunt if I needed the meat.
