So I checked the bad camera first, and I was pretty bummed, so I went to camp and decided to cut a little wood.
As I was cutting some firewood, a herd of a dozen elk trotted past, 100 yards from camp. A small 6x6 and a raghorn in the group.
Later, I spooked a much larger 6x6 out of his mid-day nap area.
Not much time to post much ... going to go look for cow elk on a hay meadow this evening.
But overall, I think it was a success ... elk are there, and in numbers that one can see them at mid-day from camp! I rode about 17 miles by GPS, and saw a lot of great new ground, too. Sign seems limited primarily to tracks. Saw some rubs. (All the bulls I saw were out of velvet). Found a new game trail that connects with another trail.
Oh, and the group of 12 elk? They were coming FROM my \"bad\" camera, and TO my treestand.
Went to hunt cow elk on hay fields. It didn\'t look like they were there, but then my son saw movement ... 3 elk ... a cow, calf, and last year\'s calf.
Perfect.
We sorted out a way to get close. It was one of those \"Go down that draw, sneak along that fence line, and if we make it to that little bunch of bushes we\'ll have a chip shot\"-kind of things.
Well, we made it to the little bushes, but I screwed-up by exposing myself to range them. 225 yards ... and looking right at me ... for a second. Then, they were gone.
Oh, well ... still a great day ... lots of elk, and time with the kid.
Thanks for sharing. That\'s a nice bull, I would be tickled to bring home something like that. Nice to know you have elk in your area and you can find them. I would say you are well ahead of the game!
