Your #1 goal for 2014 elk hunt

To see my son standing at full draw, solid as a rock, as I call an elk to within 20 yards or closer. :micdrop:

That is one of the best things in the world!! I\'ve had that experience the last 8 years, but only last year did I see my youngest son actually shoot and the arrow hit the bull! It was AWESOME!

i want to DRAW a tag. love me some OTC hunting, but that added specter of elk hunting crowds is always a problem.

after i draw a tag, i want to successfully call one to me..and i want to have the chance to come to full draw.

that\'s it. not too lofty of a goal.. getting the elk is the iciing..i need the cake first.

My goal is the same each year: simply to draw an elk tag here in NM.

If I do draw, my goal will be to practice treestand bow shots. I put in with some friends who hunt from stands, which is new territory for me.

If I don\'t draw, my goal will be to practice making coffee so maybe I can tag along with mtnmutt, keep camp, do some calling, and help pack out that big elk she\'s going to get.

Learn my new area. The place I hunted last year had WAY to many people, so I\'m going to put two ridges between me and the trail head.

Not to worried about getting anything this year, mainly because I need to spend a lot of time just exploring. But I did apply for a ES Archery Deer tag to go along with my OTC ES Elk Tag.

After last years success, I now take the position of \"I archery hunt for fun, I rifle hunt for food\".

LoL. My missing elk hunting strategy: someone making my morning coffee. These last few seasons, I have been skipping my morning coffee to get into the woods sooner. Perhaps, I have been falling asleep when the elk come to my calls.

Good luck with the NM tags. If you get the tag, I will send you Swede\'s treestand book.

I just hope he connects with it. I did this last yr for my son. he miss judged the yardage and sent the arrow over her back  but it was awesome to have a cow run up to 20yds and look for the bull she just heard.

well i have LOP cow tags for my father and I. He is recently retired after 42 years as an engineer for th BNSF and talked him into moving from my hometown of chicago to baker city, oregon! so i splurged and got us 2 tags for a cow hunt, it will be his first elk hunt. its a very nice-BIG ranch in eastern Oregon, with a huge resident herd. will be a great hunt for us! so this year i know i will have meat in the freezer so not so much pressure during bow season. my goal for archery season is to harvest a mature 5x5 or bigger. JohnF and I have some great areas and make a good team, so im fore-seeing a few nice bulls taking a dirt nap!

I see you snuck in, welcome JJ!

I\'d like to get to know the area we hunted last year better and although I\'d love to kill an elk, I\'d really like to have my partner get a chance this year.
He got to witness my \"Aspen Abuse\" last year and it would be great to see him zip an elk this September.

Rudyc, I\'ve yet to do an elk hunt so, \"aspen abuse\"? Does this belong in the adult section or are you using arrows to mark hunting spots?

Get close to some elk with my bow. A shot would be nice cow or bull it doesn\'t matter for my first elk.

I thought I was nuts...probably am! I, like Jaquomo, have a hankering to go somewhere new. This is in spite of the fact that we now have a pretty good handle on the area we hunt. In fact, both years years there, we have had numerous opportunities at good bulls and took a cow last year!
Colorado is a big state. I keep feeling that I am still missing something new and better!

#1 goal for this year is help my brother get his first elk. I\'ve been running his butt up and down the mountains for 10 years and he has yet to fling an arrow at the mighty wapiti. Been close but no cigar. Our biggest problem is finding enough elk to play with. That has become a major problem.

Have Fun! :upthumb: And enjoyable experience spending time with my son. A Kill would just be icing on the cake.

Dan

To learn the basic fundamentals of elk hunting. That is evenly paired up with getting close to an elk as well.

If I can learn the basics and get close to an elk on my first elk hunt ever, it will just prime me up for the years to come!

Absolute #1 goal for 2014 is to get my wife a good bull in Unit 61 during 1st rifle season. She has 15 points so plenty to draw assuming I didn\'t bugger up the application! Brad, be ready for some questions after I have the tag in hand or confirmed via the CDOW website. Buglemaster, if your group draws also, let\'s plan a scouting trip and cookout sometime in mid-late July. We plan on being in the Ouray area then.

Secondary goals:

Spend more time scouting a different area so that maybe Curtis or I could connect on an elk....or deer....or bear.....or grouse......or chipmunk....

Get a speed goat with my bow hunting with my good friend Bear(Jim).

Continual goals: Shoot more, exercise more.

I would like to have an opportunity to go scout a new area I found scouring maps, and then to pack into the area for my hunt. Hopefully to harvest any elk with my bow, but would like an opportunity at a big bull. My elk season will be short (maybe one vaction day) as my vacation days are limited with a family vacation planned, and most of my hunting vacation days will be for a high country rifle mule deer tag I have high expectations of drawing.
