Your Choice

You are a good old hunter, and you know a thing or two.
Your objective is to kill an elk, so just what will you do?
Elk thrive on different lands. Far and wide they roam.
If you choose to hunt one? How can you bring it home?

There are gut check hunts whilst the temperatures do soar.
There are pack in hell holes, that may produce no more.
Campfires, tents and comrade, may be your cup of tea.
Or do you go out all alone and pursue them where they be?

So tell me now which you will pick. It can be up to three.
Each adventure will last ten days, and each one will be free.

1. Colorado guided public land September archery hunt.
2. Montana drop camp public land early November rifle hunt, with one friend.
3. Utah ranch rifle hunt, from cabin, with guide and hot meals.
4. DIY, Oregon November Roosevelt coast range November rifle hunt with two friends.
5. Wyoming mixed ranch and public land archery hunt with a friend.
6. Idaho archery hunt alone, with base camp and one or two day spike out excursions.
7. A solo desert Nevada public land trophy hunt with <10% chance of success.
8. A New Mexico six mile pack in,rifle or archery trophy hunt, with two friends.

OK. What are your choices? Remember you can pick three. Don\'t worry if getting the time off, or if obligations make it impossible. For this exercise you can do what you want.

The only one that would even come close to one I would be able to do is #3... And it would have to be easy country too... :D :D

Can\'t you just picture me with my little portable oxygen backpack stumbling around trying to keep up with a elk guide...

#5 Wyoming mixed ranch and public land archery hunt with a friend.

#8 A New Mexico six mile pack in,rifle or archery trophy hunt, with two friends.

#2 Montana drop camp public land early November rifle hunt, with one friend.

I think I\'d go:

1. Colorado guided public land September archery hunt.
2. Montana drop camp public land early November rifle hunt, with one friend.
3. Utah ranch rifle hunt, from cabin, with guide and hot meals.

#1 because it would be a great way to learn how to archery hunt for someone who has never done it. #2 because I would love to do a back-country hunt at some point, but a drop camp sounds like a heck of a lot more fun than a 6 mile pack in! And #3 because, well, why not try a hunt where you are spoiled? I could always still do my normal Colorado hunt that year to punish myself :D I would also throw #8 in there, but it doesn\'t say how I cover those 6 miles. If I am bringing camp in on my back...well, I guess I\'ll skip it. I don\'t feel the need to punish myself that bad when I don\'t have to

By the way, nice poem Swede

None of the above! I would never consider using an outfitter or guide. And, I can\'t afford the price of out of state elk tags. Guess I\'m strictly a DIY hunter in my own state. Now I suppose if one of the choices would be to hunt alone in Colorado DIY, I\'d pick that one. LOL!

The hunt(s) are free Bill...that change your mind at all? Also, only a few of them include guides ;)

Since it\'s free, #1 (Ciela Vista Ranch in southern Colo) then 5 followed by 2. I would be in Heaven on any of those hunts.

Well heck! If they are all free, How about Ted Turner\'s ranch in Montana with Chucky Adams as my guide. Or maybe one of those Arizona reservation hunts. Heck ya!!!!!

I like hunting with good friends but I would like to try a guided hunt just once.

i dont know what is more difficult for #8. finding two guys willing to go with me or having three of us pull the elusive NM elk tag. i think i have a better chance of waking up a millionaire.

Colorado Guided sounds like a blast!! nothing like local knowledge and a talent to do the calling for me.

never been to Montana. ;)

Why does no one pick #4 to be on their list? That is interesting. They make for a challenging hunt, especially if you want a large trophy.

i\'ve been focusing on all archery hunts. just my thing. not saying it makes sense, i just REALLY want a bow-elk.

I am just curious if anyone would have chosen #4 if it was an archery hunt? Like I say, I am just curious. I don\'t hunt the critters either, and I can see them occasionally from my yard.
