How big is your current elk arrow?

My last two years I was running on the light side shooting a 396 grain arrow.
With my new bow I decided to add some weight and I am now shooting 494 grains :upthumb:

492g. Blew an elk shoulder to pieces last year with it

Good to know!
Do you have the numbers from your bow, Will?

I havent chrono\'d yet, but I am thinking with my 494 I\'ll be throwing 272 fps with 80 KE.

287 fps out of my Nitrum 34 at 73#. I believe BH choice has more to do with bone crushing than KE. I think you\'re set up will do the trick :upthumb:

Well it\'s a good thing we share common interests in BHs :D

My arrow last year was 412gr and you saw how much penetration I had. It was enough to kill her but I was surprised by how much arrow was left sticking out. What is the gpi of the arrow you are shooting and are you switching to 125gr heads?

430 gr dunno how fast but has killed everything I\'ve shot with them pass thoughs on elk deer ect. Slick trick standard up front kinda depends on what is hit how true arrow is flying a bunch of variables that affect penetration I\'ve seen arrows of my buddy\'s go through like nothing and bounce up thehill next one went to fletching both broadside neither hit bone from what we could tell why the difference? Maybe animal movement or crappy release or something I really don\'t know

Dan, I\'m getting a few arrows refletched and will get both chrono\'d next week.

Last year, I was shooting a 396 gr arrow at 62# and getting around 295 fps if I recall correctly. I\'ll check those again plus I\'m thinking of a heavier arrow on my fall hunt. I\'ve got some GT Hunter XT that are around 440 gr I believe.

I want to up my draw weight to 65 lbs and will report back on my actual speeds, arrow weights and KE.

One thing to caution about calculators and chronos is that chronographs very rarely agree with calculators. That is unless you are using one of the tuner chronographs. These are the chronographs that the archery talk tuners always have. They are the ones that get 340 fps on a 335 fps bow. Take that same bow and shoot it on a Pro Chrony and you get 325. These guys normally have a shooting Chrony as they yield the fastest numbers. My Pro Chronograph will always be at least 10 fps slower than these but I can use my Chronograph to print sight tapes accurately to 120 yards. I actually had one of my bows at a guys shop who was gaining a pretty good reputation as a tuner on AT about 5 years ago. My bow shot 343 on his Easton Chronograph. It shot 327 on mine(300 gr. arrow).

Interesting info Mark. I also have a Pro Chrono and my numbers were very close to those on the calculator. I didn\'t realize there were other chrono\'s out there that were off by that much.

Yes. Look on AT and any of the popular tuners run basically the same chronographs....for a reason IMHO.

One thing I should have been more clear about is that with 60 lb limbs you will be 5+ fps slower than the ibo rating at 5 gpp. That is part of the reason why my bows are always a little slower than IBO ratings.

One of the other things that adds to it is normally the 29-30\" draw mods are the most efficient on most bows....so they make the best speed. Less that that and they might actually lose a little more than 10 fps/inch of draw. Also....a longer draw like mine(31\") will often only be 5 fps faster than the 30\" draw for the same reasons.

Other things to consider are draw length specific cams vs rotating mods. DL specific cams all thing being equal will be faster due to being more efficient. The rotating mod has to lose some efficiency to gain adjustability. Something like Hoyts system of 3 cam sizes and 5 mods per cam is somewhere in between both.

Id be interested to hear your numbers!

I\'m not a speed freak. So I can give you the typical Hillary answer. \" At this point, what difference does it make\"! :wtf: :mg: :mg: :mg:

All I know for sure is that my bow is 12 years old and my arrows over 420 gr. I really doubt if it will shoot over 260 FPS. But, it will push an arrow thru an elk or deer with no problem. And it has done it for me many, many times.
