So, for the 2013 season, will you be going for "If its brown, its down", 300" or nothing, first legal bull or some other criteria?  I find it interesting how that seems to evolve and change from year to year.

For me, 2013 is looking like fill the freezer first so while I typically have held out for a bull first and may let cows go in the early part of the season, "brown is down" seems to be where I am leaning this year.

I'm thinking first legal bull.  Especially if I'm archery hunting.  My trophy is the feeling and memory I make while hunting.  Of course a 350+ wouldn't hurt!

First legal bull in Colorado, wait for a good bull in Utah and if I draw in AZ  it's just a given that I will wait for a big bull.

Depends on if I draw or not in Idaho. If I do, then I'll be looking for 330" or better. If I don't draw, I'll have to decide where I'm going to archery hunt and then I'd like to try for a good branch antlered bull with my bow.

For me every year with the small little family I have so far. It is always "if its brown, its down."

It will depend on where I end up hunting and with who, because we will probably will be filming. But I would like to hold out for a 6x6 at least, because I haven't got one yet!!

I always try to hold out for a 5pt or bigger due to the amount of time I spend elk hunting each year and how much preparation I put into my hunts.  However, this past year I passed on a small 5 and should have taken a big 5x but since it was opening weekend I took the opportunity for granted.  I knew after passing on the bigger 5x I would end up regreting not taking him and figured I would end up with tag soup.
As luck would haveit, holding out paid off big time and I ended up taking a 345" P&Y bull!  With that said, if a big 5x crosses my path in 2013, I'm taking him!  :)

bulldown

I'm gonna go with a 4 point or better standard (basically a no spike or cow standard) this year, but I'm pretty sure I'll arrow the first bull period ;-)

If I draw my 1st rifle season tag here in Colorado I will be going for something special.  8)  If not I will do archery OTC and see what happens.

I'll be hunting a spike only unit in Utah.  This allows me to shoot a spike or cow with my bow.  My pride will have me holding out for a monster spike, but meat in the freezer sounds good too.

Going into the 2013 AZ Elk draw with 12 points, so if I draw the Unit I want.....

:) Talk is cheap. It is easy for me to say I will hold out for a certain size, but when I see the bull I want I will know!
That being said... I can't see myself shooting anything under a 360 class bull with the unit I will be hunting if I do infact draw.

For archery i will try to hold out for a 5x5 but having never taken a bull, if a 4x4 (legal minimum in most colorado units) comes in range hes probably a gonner! then rifle season will be all about meat!

For me it is about the meat, last year I shot a spike when ther was 2 cows with him. I regeted not shotting a cow as there would have been a lot more meat.

what spike only unit are you hunting? Wasatch? Manti?

I have never been a trophy hunter in my life.  Now with that being said i will take a bull of a lifetime if i have the opportunity but if its not the first legal elk i see then maybe next year.  But for me the first legal animal i always go after to fill that freezer for my family.

Still working on setting my goals.  Last year it was a 6-point.  Good luck to everyone reaching their personal goals in 2013.

Mature 6 point or better if I hunt Montana, Idaho will be 6 point , washington roosies will pretty much be any legal bull this year.

Would love to hold out for a big bull that they just do not exist where I hunt so I am happy to take anything legal that makes a mistake. I have been lucky and have never shot anything less than a 5x but none have been large. I don't think I'll get a chance a bigger bulls until my dad decides he not going to hunt anymore. He can't walk that far so we really can't get away from other hunters much.
