Brad, can\'t recall but I think you wear glasses. If so, I take a no fog cloth plus a cleaner cloth. Plus, a backup pair or contacts.

Russ,
For sure!
In fact I just got new glasses - 2 pair in fact. [never had contacts]
And I always keep a cleaner cloth in my wallet

I\'m likely to be the only one on here that you would be able to contact during the time you need it and you know I\'m more than willing to help you if I can... :help2:  :help2:

How does this InReach work???

So you could send me a text message or post on Facebook so my wife could see it or both????

I have the inreach se. It was a compromise I made with my wife. If I wanted to hunt (I hunt alone due to being new to co) I had to have a way of contacting her or search in rescue because my wife\'s convinced somethings going to eat me in the woods.

The inreach is really slick. I don\'t think you can post to Facebook but you can send email/text or you can send location pings which pop up on a topo map so people of your choosing can follow your location. That gives me an idea...cnelk or otcwill, want to borrow mine for a day or 2...I just need to set up the location pings! ;)

If the SHTF you can send out a distress signal. Not sure who it goes to but supposedly the cavalry will come running!

You can use it monthly and shut it off during the offseason. It also runs as a GPS so you have a backup. If you sync to your iPhone it will bring up a topo map and track your location. Like I said, super slick.

Good info!

If there is something you dont like about the unit, what would that be?

I also have a Inreach and its awesome.

You can send your messages, and it can go to email, or text messages. You can post to Facebook and Twitter if you so choose. You choose who you want to see your messages.

Location pinging uses more battery life so keep that in mind. When you send a message the message shows with the exact GPS location along with a map of your location. You can also set up pre-set messages that are unlimited so you can use those if your worried about using up to many messages and exceeding your limit.

My wife enjoyed pulling up my message, and being able to zoom in on aerial maps to see exactly where we where. She also would send me weather forecasts right before she went to sleep so when I woke up the next day and turned the unit on I had a idea of the weather for the day.

The only drawback i have found is the battery is built into the unit. So if you where ever to have a battery issue you cant swap it out.

Also when sending a SOS signal you are able to communicate to search and rescue to let them know what is going on. This IMO is huge as they know how bad things are and have a idea on what resources they need to help you.

If your in the field for more than a week you need a way to charge the unit up.

Another huge thing is you can communicate from one Inreach to another. So if your partner has one you can let each other know what is going on, what you have down etc.

I don\'t have a single thing I don\'t like. Battery life is outstanding. I used it for a week out in the woods, only turning it on to send texts to my wife. When I got home it was at 97%!!!!!

You can send free preset message...messages you type up prior to leaving, I believe you get 3. Something like \"All is well. Love you\". Then you can send that to your wife...or hunting buddies. Then you can send actual texts. You get x per month depending on the plan.

What kind of weight is he limiting you to Brad ?...a buddy of mine just bought a J4 cub and there is absolutely no extra room to spare in those things.

Scot
I asked him that very question and his answer was \" I\'ll get it all in\"

Ok then! :)

But really, 2 guys should easily be able to stay within 50-60lbs each and have everything needed.

I weigh 170 and add 50lbs is only 220lbs

I always have a heck of a time staying under 50 lbs. ... by the time you add food, shelter, bow and all the other gear it adds up fast. Maybe the Super Cub can haul more.

Jealous in Minnesota :)

Is there an annual subscription rate for the InReach ? Just curious! I know there is on the SPOT.

Brad,

What about camp shoes?

I always try to bring a light pair of shoes to wear around camp to let my boots dry, or to put on quick when I need to run out of the tent.

Do you carry a spare release with you? I always have one with when I\'m hunting.

My Helly Hansen Impertech II rain coat arrived today.
Tell ya what.
From all the research I did and now that I have one, it\'s a piece of gear everyone should have.
I will be using this a lot

Wife got me a HH jacket years ago ... and I have yet to find the weather bad enough to \"need\" it. I feel way over-gunned with that thing.

what about rain pants.

i think rain pants should go one easily over boots. mine have a waterproof zip down the sides. comes off like a cool pair of basketball sweat pants.
