Hey this is mike from Maryland. Comin out west in a couple weeks and it couldn't come fast enough. I really don't post much on forums but this one looks good but not many posts. Why? This is a kickass site? We'll anyway I'll just tell my plans for my short elk season. Love to here plans from all of you.

My best friend john lives outside steamboat near yampa. I will fly in the day before the opener. I would have chose the fallowing week but I'll take whatever fits in my family's schedule. Bless my wife for letting go for elk every year. Two small children! It's like I work all year to have that one week in the mountains...

Been out for the past six years and have harvested a few cows and a couple raghorns with rifle/muz but nothing in my three try's with a bow. I seem to get in a swirling wind in my encounters. Last year got within 50 yards of a scream in bull but just over the crest of a hill. All I saw were tips of antlers and steam from his bugles... So close. But it's always a awesome adventure. I'm hoping my luck changes this year as I plan on glassing up high for the first couple days and dropping down in some lower elevations blm's for a break.

What's everybody's plan?

Scouting reports?

Tips?

I'm just stoked and need to here from others

Thanks, shoot straight!

I hope this is your year to stick one with your bow! I am just as excited as you, our season in Utah starts Saturday, needless to say I am like a little kid on Christmas. Be safe in your travels and keep us posted.

Best of luck Mike! Our season opens up in a few weeks, just had the hunting partner over tonight for a shoot. Last scouting trip is planned for Monday and Tuesday ( bless the oilfield for a weeks vacation every 21 days ) then I've got 8 days in the middle of sept to chase elk and deer!

Good luck mike. My plan is to get off work a bit early on sept 5th, then head out, sleep on a mountain and have my tag filled by 9 am opening day, sept 6 in MT. The areas I hunt, I have been scouting for months (and years!) and I cut them off in pinch points in which I take the swirling winds out of the equation. If they r vocal, I'll call. Highly recommend to try this technique makes for an exciting morning. If I haven't got a shot by 11 am, I'll probe the bedding areas and try to challenge the herd bull. And too answer your question, yeah, I can't sleep!

i am not even going this year and i am excited lol i cannot wait to see pics and hear all the stories

This is my 1st year hunting Elk and going at it with my bow. Being new to the bow hunting world I have spent a small fortune and must also say, Gracias to the wife for not shooting me in the face w/ all the $$$ I have spent this 1st year.

I plan to hunt opening morning (Labor Day) then every weekend after until the last week of my hunt, where I am planning to head into the deep wilderness for 5 days if needed. I have been scouting a couple times and headed back to scout the weekend before the season opens and spending the weekend before opening day (Monday) scouting. I am learning the area but have to see elk just sign of their presence.

I'm so Jacked Up about Elk hunting I have been waking up in the middle of the night to elk hunting dreams and thoughts of the adventure to come. I think I might have found the adventure and challenge I currently need in my life. I am a combat Vet and was in Iraq 10 years ago this summer. I know like many other vets we like to challenge ourselves and push ourselves to our limits. Just making sure we still got it.

I do have to admit waking up to good elk dreams beats a flashback any day!!!

Good luck to you all and God Bless you all on your travels and hunts

*sigh* and there's little ol' me...sat here in Blighty...where bowhunting is illegal...

so is there no hunting in that whole country ? or is it just no bow hunting?

Bowhunting was prohibited under legislation back in the mid-60s; more by omission than design, as there was no bowhunting culture to speak up for using archery equipment as a legal and ethical means of take at the time. Deer legislation further precluded the use of archery equipment.

The Hunting Act 2004 refers to prohibiting of using Hounds to hunt wild mammals [England and Wales] except for certain specific exempt activities.

But we still have our Hounds and we are still practising our archery :)

well i am no fan of hunting game except hares, squirrels, and hogs with dogs i do not oppose others from wanting to do so just not my style but archery there is a case where its less violent than firearms and should be allowed but one must face all obsticals put in front of him wish you all the luck when you come to the states brother

Leaving IL headed for central MT  the morning of Sept 11th!! Can't wait. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to go this year, but I couldn't stand the thought of missing out on the action that my brothers would be enjoying without me. The wife is having a hard time getting used to this new passion Iv picked up called elk hunting :).  I'll have a LOT of kissing up to do for the next 12+ months (5 year wedding anniversary is the 19th)!!  Good luck to all!

Heading out next Friday morning & making the day plus drive out west. Can't wait to see the Rockies again. After the road trip it's throwing my 80lbs pack on my back, hiking 4.5 miles back, setting up camp, filtering water, and then hitting the mountain top to glass. It's going to be a butt kicker, and I can't wait. Hope I get to stuff my pack with elk meat. Good luck to everyone. Looking forward to hearing all the great stories. Be safe.

i can't wait and i can't sleep looking forward to another great year looking to go for a fifth year in a row with a elk down and 4 yrs in a row for my mom and i am going to put my time in on my wife first , she has been blanked for the last 2 years. mostly time related but after missing a 300 rosie she is ready to rumble.

Good luck you guys. I hope your backs are sore when you get home from packing big antlers and meat! I'm headed out for round 2 in the morning, got my fingers crossed.

Yep leaving this coming Friday morning. Purty darn excited! Made up my meals last night and froze em.
Can't wait!
Found out yesterday that I'm fortunate enough to get a cow tag for second rifle season too!

And I don't think my wife is going to divorce me! ;D

double whammy for me.....  leaving for MT on the 2nd, and our local grouse season opens in the 1st....got a new pup last year and have yet to hunt with him, so I'm going to have about 1 afternoon to pop his cherry on some grouse.  about as excited for that as I am elk hunting!

I am getting crazy excited!!! Its better than Christmas morning when I was kid! Headed to Colorado in less than two weeks for my first hunt(Calling for buddy), then on Sept. 20th head out for my hunt that I won from Winterhawk Outfitters in their "Let's Go Hunting" Sweepstakes! Super pumped! Been losing sleep for weeks already. Can't wait to hear that first Bugle!!! Good luck to all this fall. Looking forward to seeing some great MEAT POLE pics!

I am really getting pumped up for my first CO archery elk hunt.  It seems like months have dwindled into weeks and now the weeks are turning into days.  We start our hike up the Mountain on September 19th....and I can't wait.  Been getting the final gear list together and making those last little purchases.

Im pretty fired up for Elk hunting. too bad i have the last two weeks of the month off so i must wait a little longer then everyone else

Well the excitement grows.....  "Banjosmith", I have no sympathy for you. You got married in the fall time of year? Duh-huh. If you are any kind of hunter, you don't get married during hunting and football seasons!!!

Yeah, I'm chilling because I must wait. I have my hunt set for late season(last week of Nov.) for spotting and stalking the big ones at higher elevations. The old bulls retreat to higher elevations than the herd.  :)    It is here they are feed and recover from the rut prior to the deeper snows forcing them down a bit.
