I have a small square of leather that I use to rub in the wax. That way it can get nice and warm and also keeps it from being messy. And no excess bits.

Good idea, I did blister my fingertip once, I put it on heavy then melt it in with fingertips

yeah i do it with fingers also, but i have heard of the leather trick
