After we made the first trip out and back to camp, we gathered the troops and went back to get the two elk.
It was great to have extra friends in camp to help with the packing!
Arriving at the elk quarters, we divvied up the quarters among everyone.
Knowing the carcasses where close together, I packed in a tree stand in hopes to fill my bear tag.
Some photos were taken and once everything was all set, we headed back to the truck.
The down side of Labor Day means that some have to leave camp and go back to the \'real world\'
Deertick, Cole and Tom all had to get back, so we saw them off and got ready for more elk hunting....
Lets get back to elk hunting shall we?
That evening, me, Matt and Calvin all sat in tree stands.
Calvin had 4 elk come so close to him that all he could see was the nose of one at 5 yards.
Not a single one presented a shot tho!
Matt saw........... zippo.....
Me?
I made a few mews and about 5 min later these 5 elk came right under my tree
Thanks for the replies everyone!
It sure helps to keep a journal and take lots of pics thru the hunt to help remember everything that went on!
Tuesday Morning - Sept 2nd 2014 - Bear Season opens!
Tuesday morning found us once again slipping thru the timber doing cold call setups.
With Matt and myself having filled our cow tags, were were after bulls. Calvin was in the batters box
On our 3rd call set of the morning, we were in a realy good area that always holds elk.
We were doing the \'triangle calling\' setup with me being the back point.
At the start of each call, I ask Matt and Calvin who is going to the right and who is going to the left...
They choose accordingly and go get setup about 40 yds each way
Once ready, they each give a \'mew\' and the 3 way calling begins.
Like I have mentioned, if you use this method, everyone needs to pay attention to see who answers and who doesnt.
We were about 5 in into the call set and I noticed that Matt wasnt calling!
I lean to my left and see this cow elk coming right toward me with 2 more behind her
Im thinking to myself \'That cow has got to be right on top of Matt\'... !!!!
I mew a few more times and she stops and looks at me.
At this time, I am wondering how Matt is holding off on NOT SHOOTING THIS ELK!
One of two things must have happened!
Either he fell asleep, or he has determined that he will hold out ...
He wasnt asleep.
The cow drifted off, taking the others with her.
Calvin had no idea all of this took place less than 40 yards from where he was sitting.
We felt bad for him as we were really trying to get an elk in for him now
Loved the stories and the videos. That\'s awesome to be there for your son\' first bowkill. That would have made my whole season. I look forward to the day I can take my son out there and hopefully have a similiar experience.
