cnelk\'s 2014 Archery Elk Hunt - Story & Pic Heavy

Derek
Yes we did.
But like Jeff at ElkMtnGear I was under the weather with that same virus.
Matt and I hunted for bulls but all that came in to our calling was a spike.
We pulled all of our tree stands too.
We went to a different area Saturday morning in hopes to get into more elk.

Our first call was .32 miles from the truck and 2 camps.
Matt and I were setup about 30 yards apart calling back and forth when he suddenly stopped calling.
I keep calling and then I hear THWACK! TWACK!
Hmmmm. That didn\'t sound right

I look over to see a couple of elk trot off and I call again.
They stop but the wind was bad and they drifted off.
I went over to where MAtt was at and wondered what happened.

It seems that when a cow came in at 15 yards, the fun meter got pegged again and the bull only philosophy went out the window.
As he drew the arrow came off his string. The cow just looked at him
He re attached the arrow and the cow moved out to about 20 yards.
He drew again and the arrow went right over the back!
Mis judged the distance.

We laughed pretty good about that and went on to make a few more call sets but to no avail.
We decided to hang it up for the year on a good, fun positive note and packed up and came home

That virus is definitely making the rounds...I have been dealing with it for well over a week now. It won\'t go away!

Great stories Brad....  Ya\'ll keep that virus out there since I sure don\'t need it....

I did enjoy it Brad. I wish I could have found a gut pile when I was hunting for bear.

Congrats, Brad, on a great meat filled season. With all those guys in camp how could you not have a good time. I\'m sure your son is still grinning.

My son is a huntin\' and fishing fool who likes to smile!

This week he is in Marthas Vineyard for his annual fishing derby.

Here he is last year with a false albacore he caught out in MV

Upon completing the gutless method on the 2 elk, we hung the quarters in some blow down trees.
We carried the backstraps and other loose meat out on that first trip

The right rear hoof of my cow had a strange form to it
Does anyone know what this is or what its called?

It may be similar to \"slipper foot\" whitetails get. Biologists attribute that to nutritional deficiencies.

Yeah, but the left foot had the same nutrition. Actually, if you look at it, I think the underlying structures are abnormal (probably injured) ... it\'s not just a hoof-wall thing.
