cohunter14\'s 2015 hunt

The bull reared up like a horse and took off into the woods. I knew it was hit, but how good? I waited for 30 minutes, which was enough for our two other guys to meet up with me. We began walking up to where I shot it and there was some blood. I marked the spot while my dad went a little deeper on the line the bull went. It wasn\'t a few seconds later and I hear \"there he is!\" The bull hadn\'t gone more than 30 yards.

I will finish the rest of the story later this afternoon. Got to get a few things done, but I didn\'t want to leave you guys in suspense for too long!!

Derek,
I think you shot the bull that was on the left of the two that were sparring on your trail cam... :)

Congrats Derek! Sounds like you guys paid your dues & glad you got to reap the reward! That\'s a nice bull! Guess we need to forgive you for stringing us along. Well done !

Thanks all! Brad, you made an interesting point on that trail cam pic. I was hoping to look into that in more detail. Tough to tell for sure, but it very well could be that bull. He was taken about 800 yards or so from that game cam.

To continue with the story, we did the gutless method on him and began the pack out. Luckily, I had the other two guys and our third was able to get to us right as we were finishing up with the filets. Unfortunately, we had no frame pack with us, so the first trip consisted of one guy taking the backstraps and filets, two guys each carrying a front quarter, and me taking the head. We got back to the truck and I headed back in for one of the rear quarters with the frame pack. After getting that one back to the truck, I returned for a quick lunch and a change of clothes (into shorts I might add) and returned for the final quarter. The rest of our guys hunted a different area that afternoon, but everyone was pretty worn out so they didn\'t travel far. We celebrated a bit that night and then got to bed.

Tuesday morning was spent glassing from the same spot once again. Hey, we had seen elk there the previous two days, why not try again?

We glassed until about 8:30 and were about to call it quits when I spotted some elk feeding up higher than we took the bull the day before. We came up with a plan and those three took off after the elk. Unfortunately, none of them were able to connect. My father jumped a couple of them from their bedding location and couldn\'t get a shot and my buddy jumped a few more from another spot on his way up, but also couldn\'t get a shot.

Tuesday afternoon, those three hunted another area while I took a scouting trip to a different part of the unit. Hey, might as well try to gain some intel instead of sitting around camp, right? They came up empty handed and we all met back at camp for a backstrap hors\' douvre and some burgers.

As a side note to this story, my sister is pregnant with her and her husband\'s first child and is due next week. Because of that, my dad brought along a satellite phone just in case. If she were to have gone into labor, him and I were going to bail. Well, Tuesday evening she was feeling some contractions, so we all decided to pack up and bail first thing Wednesday morning. But not after a good night celebrating a successful hunt with a few drinks, some cards, and great camaraderie!

great hunt and bull derek. but, how did the bull break his leg. i assume it was the bullet.

Overall, the hunt was a success, but it has left us up in the air as to what we will be doing next year. It seems that our area has quite a few bulls, but the overall number of elk is definitely not very high. That could make for a tough hunt, but we\'ll see. Would love to hear everyone\'s opinion on what they would do in our situation. It went from \'we\'ll never hunt here again\' to \'well, I guess we should go back\'.

Anyway, I do want to also give cnelk a shout out and a thank you. He helped me believe in this particular area and it is where I spent most of my time scouting and placing game cameras this summer. Always nice to have a second set of eyes to confirm your thoughts!

Yes, I forgot to mention that. It had been shot in the leg previously from the looks of it. Still seemed to get around alright though.

Another side note: this was my second animal with Berger bullets this year and I have to say I\'m impressed. My shot was a little low, but that bull went nowhere before expiring and again, the bullet didn\'t exit. When you drop all of the energy from a 230 grain bullet into an animal, I guess good things happen! :upthumb:

Congratulations Derek. That is a beautiful bull.

Where is the rest of the story? Did your sister have her baby? Is she and her baby doing okay?

Now you need to switch to bow season, so you don\'t miss your niece or nephew\'s birthday each year. :p

Sorry, forgot to put an update in there on that...she actually still hasn\'t had the baby. The contractions went away, so we are just in a waiting game right now :D
