Hello all. It's been a while since my last post but, that's the joy of having two kids under 3 years of age. I wanted to find out what everyone's opinion on the use of estrus elk urine while hunting are? A good idea...........or bad?
Thanks for the help.
I always carry some. I never use it as an attractant but usually spray the trees I'm standing next to. I fooled a few cows noses over the years so I know it doesn't scare them. I figure with winds being what they are, there might be a gust where I'd rather have a bulls nose full of estrous than human!
Yes, its great stuff, I use the Ambush Moccasin Joe stuff, the Rock Mountain Elk Urine and the Elk Fire. Yes you smell horrible, but we also get elk feet away and looking for that cow...
Used them for years. Urine,poop,gland,brush,sap,dirt/mud. Ones found on trail are best. An edge is all it is. Boots, hat, sleeves, legs all get it of one form or another. Just like taking hunt gear off when not hunting. A scent edge.
No man made scented stuff for me,or soap w/color brightners either.
I can smell food, smoke, shampoo, deodorant, dryer thingies on so many hunters as they get out of their truck with so called pine tree hanging in it..... and then they spray scent away ......and pray.
:-X sorry for the rant, carry on.
I had a old timer tell me a few years ago that he would put some of the Moccasin Joe Cow in Heat (pink label - it's on the Elk101 store) on a small gauze pad and then put that under his shoe lace as he walked around. He claimed that more than once a bull elk would come tailing them up the trail later on in the day. I kinda laughed but it got me thinking....
So I tried it 5 years ago as I marched up a hill to a treestand. I took the excess and sprayed it on a sage brush about 10 yards from the tree I was going to set up in. About an hour later I cow called to a bull that was bugling up the mountain side from me and he went silent. I thought I had screwed it up! Then about 5 min later this 6x6 emerged from the timber downhill from me. I thought for sure he'd pass across the opening and into the adjacent timber but the moment he crossed the patch I had taken walking up hill to the treestand, his nose went to the ground, he turned 90 degrees and nose down followed step for step my path until there he stood just 10 yards away, broadside, sniffing the sage brush.
He's mounted nicely on my wall. True story.
So I use it as often as I can stand the constant smell of cow urine.
I have used many different brands and not just the estrus urine. I like to use the scent to cover scent especially if calling. Spray bottles that almost atomize the liquid work great and will keep the elk confused for a bit even if the wind changes and works against you.
