Favorite Elk call?

Last year i Switched from the primos hyper lip and pack bugle to mossback widow maker and the mossback split bugle tube. Had awesome results. And I always use primos mini sonic dome diagrams. They just fit in my mouth better.

My favorite reed calls are Wayne Carlton's Lonesome Cow and Primos Cowgirl.  My favorite bull call is nclonghunter!  I learned that if you can't do a great bull call have a hunting partner that can!  I also use various diaphram calls to either make cow sounds, whines, bugles and chuckles and I seem to prefer the Carlton's diaphram calls as they are much more flexible and take less time to break in than others I have used, which feel like a sheet of plywood in the roof of your mouth.  My favorite elk tube is a piece of 2 inch black flexible duct hose cut to about 16" in length with paracord for a sling.  Also don't under estimate the simplicity of the Primos Hoochie Mama or Carlton's push type calls.  They work if not over used and with using other style calls it adds variety similar to a herd of cows.  I never leave on a hunt without my Hoochie Mama tethered to my belt and stuffed in my pocket on my right side.  It is easy to operate one handed and without looking!

I like the Houchi Moma, they seem to come running in fast. You had better be ready and paying attention. I had one run in on me at 15 yards and had my gun leaning against a rock. Pretty tense moment.

Rockie Jacobsen drew me in MANY years ago and I have used his bugle system / tube ever since.  Usually, I'll just use the tube w/ a diaphram (take out the Conqueror mouthpiece). If you are a beginner, I highly recommend using his bugling system...all you need to do is produce air  ;D

I got the variety pack from bugling bull game company and was finally able to make some elk sounds with a diaphragm call. You'll find a stye that fits your mouth and works for you.

For a grunt tube I use both the Select-A-Bull with the extended tube as well as a home made one using a plastic kids baseball bat.  Many pro callers use the plastic bat and they sound excellent in my opinion.  So if you're on a tight budget but want a great tube, try the bat.  I actually bought mine thru Matt Meyer who's a pro caller from Denver and I think it was like $15 or $20.  I'll need to put some softer material over it as it does make noise when going thru brushy cover.

I use a wide variety.  I walk with a diaphragm (Carlton's) in my mouth, but have a Estrus Whine and Fight'n Cow (Carlton's) and a Primos Hyper Lip attached to a small grunt tube aroudn my neck.  Best call for me of all time was my youngest daughter and her Carlton's diaphragm and Estrus Whine (15 bulls in 1 week).

I use a variation of all sorts of calls. Different makes and models help to make me sound like a group. Most of the calls these days all have pretty descent sound. My bugle I use a power bugle but looking to change to a mouth reed style because of sound crispness.

I've used the remedy for roughly 6 years or so now, and have called in numerous elk both bulls and cows.
My buddy and I can call elk in from the pacific ocean to the snake river.
This call has worked for me anywhere across the state, its all about how you hold your mouth is what I tell people hahaha.
For the past 4 years now I've called up bugling bulls and order 15 or more at a time since I tend to loose them over the 24+ days if hunting during September.
Ive filmed these hunts for the past 3 years now so you could say I have the prove to show they work!

hunter97219,

If you call from the Snake River, can the elk at the Pacific Ocean really hear you?  ;)

all depends on which diaphragm I can tune the best, then elknuts buggle has worked well for me lately :)

Temptress tied together with Carlton lost elk. mixing them both together has worked out well for me...

Reading over all the choices it looks like the diaphram rules supreme, but it interesting how everyone finds a specific call they like the best and they are different brands.
Some new members on herethat may add to the list.

Got to be honest, trial and error. There are a lot of them and I end up spending more than I would like to on calls to try them out. Many of the Diaphragm calls you can tune for you mouth since everyone's is different. The best thing to do is try some different ones and see what fits you mouth the best! Then work with them till you get the sounds you want.

Raging Bull, but this year they seemed to like The Hoochie, seems like every year they like something different.

Back in the day I used a cut up shop-vac tube and an old turkey call.  Tried lots of different calls but still like a mouth diaphram call.
Right now my elk pack has 4 bugling bull diaphram calls, a Carlton Fight'n Cow Elk Call and an old school Bruce Hancock's Calls-M-All Game Call.
I use cow calls 75% of the time and 20% location bugles and the rarely challenge call since I hunt OTC where hunters are all over the place.
