Hunt Update Thread

ahhhhhh..... the ol\' \'Forgot Range Finder in the Truck ploy.....\'

The things you DONT dream about :)

Good luck Dan!

@ Matt Dworak

Those boys are starting out real well!

Do you have your hunt specifics written on your blog at ThinAirOutdoors?

Go get \'em Dan! Figure you\'ll take that toad tonight on the water hole. Best of luck.

Great shooting Matt!

As for my bull tag, it\'s been signed and punched. I do feel that bull is going to die and in less than ideal circumstances. This will be another stark reminder when I\'m in the field to slow down. Likely a big bull will come by my stand next weekend broadside and stop but I\'m okay with that. Where there are bull there will be cows!

Scott, I\'ve taken other game animals with my bow - whitetail, muley, hogs - just never an elk.

You did the right thing Russ. I\'m not impressed with guys that knowinly wound but not recover animals and still go on and hunt. But you still have a valid cow tag. Keep hunting! Good luck!

Got two bugling. One on each side of me.

Far out, but they are responding to me.

Thanks, Bill!

Today has been one of those days I should have stayed in.
The lack of sleep has made me do some dumb things. However I have learned a lot of things today so far and being it\'s my only second day of elk hunting ever, then I am pleased with the results.

I was in a tree stand when I had those two bulls bugling on either side of me. Neither of which were close or coming in. It started getting late and I knew the winds were going shift, so I got down and climbed to the top of a ridge.

Big mistake here was I left all of my gear at the base of the tree because I just wanted to check out the top of the ridge. Mind you that\'s no gps, water or bugle tube.

Anyways, I get to the top of the ridge and just for kicks I let out a location bugle just by cupping my hands. Sure enough a bull sounds off down in some thick and nasty crap. I guess about 500 yards. This being only 30 minutes left of good winds.

So I started navigating my way through this area, which let me tell you was loaded with fresh bull sign. Anyways, I called, he called, and I moved. Then I called, he called and I moved. Finally I called and he was close. He let some chuckles put this time and I could feel how close he was.

This is where it all went wrong. Either the wind was finally swirling and he caught my scent or he didn\'t like my final call, but he took off.

I honestly have no idea which though. I did a final location, but now that I think of it that is kind of silly. I figured I was 80 yards away and any elk would know how close he was. So I think me doing another location probably made him got \"what in the world?\".

Or it was my scent. Anyways I had tons of fun even getting that close. The issue after was I got myself in some thick stuff with no gps. I knew the road would be picked up if I went east so I did. I was 3 miles away from my truck. Which is another 1.5 miles back 9n to get my pack :)

Good start? Haha

no gear...... no Bueno :(
so did you bugle your way to him? the chuckles indicated that he upped his aggression towards you.... how aggressive was your last call, assuming it was a bugle.
him running off was a sure sign of him winding you. but you said that he was DOWN in some thick nasty stuff. so the thermals should have been going down until they switched and went up... they do swirl a bit before they settle down. scent check scent check scent check.... and go after him at an angle instead of right at him.
I am curious as to what the other brilliant minds here will have to say!

I concur...chuckles are typically a bull telling his cows (or you) to come to him. If you cow called, and he didn\'t see a cow (or buy your \"story\")...game over, move em out.

You did well to get close to him before calling...always avoid giving away your position before an encounter if possible.

This bull was a lover, not a fighter IMHO.

You would need to try to get in between him and his cows to make an effective challenge.

Dan you should have used that sexy cow talk. I think you scared him off.

I\'m hoping for or morning like that. I do agree with the angle and the thermals as Gary mentioned. My game plan is to bugle to locate get close, new and be prepared to blast him with a bugle the minute he responds. Not sure if it will work. If not I may chuckle and cow call and move away from him only to try and sneak closer silently. Just some ideas/strategies I\'ve read, no real experience :angle:

Dan: Remember what I told you about bugling to cows instead of bulls? Sometimes they are hard to figure out and you have to play around until you hit a sound he is looking for. Sounds like you may have over done it with some wrong sounds. But you had an exciting day for sure. I always did say, \" You learn more in one year of bowhunting elk than you will in a life time of hunting them with a rifle\"!

I\'ll bet you won\'t forget your gear again! I laid my pack down once an thought I never would find it. Dang camo anyway! Live and learn!

He still has a bull tag too. Sometimes loosing an animal happens. I agree with you in regards to people that take pot shots at animals, but russ did everything right. Shoot a bull buddy and a cow. Fill that freezer!
