Hunt Update Thread

Following him brought me to this.


No cow poop and I don\'t think I see any cow tracks.
This is in the middle of nowhere.


What do you think?

It would have a lot to do with if it\'s natural or man made.. :problem: :problem:

I would be afraid if the the local game warden walked up on me while hunting over it he would tell me it was man made and illegal to hunt over in Colorado... :downthumb: :downthumb:

In cattle country on private land there are a lot of man made salt licks that both wildlife and cattle use...

But like I said \"I\'d rather be safe than sorry\" and keep my distance away from it... ;) ;)
 
since I am still in the \"training phase\" I will keep this going... until Friday that is!!!!! anywho, went for a 6.6 mile bike ride after supper, after work, and shot some bow in low light just before dark. man its getting dark early....

Not much for elk or elk sign this morning. Gonna try a new spot tomorrow. Now as far as deer go, saw about 50 tonight with about 15-20 bucks. Thre were five 8 pts that were 20\"+/- 1\" . There was a seven pt I believe was a solid 24\" inside. Might be a little muley genetics in there. Other side of field so moving stand tomorrow.
 
It\'s 237 am. I\'m out tracking another bull for a guy in my camp......



I tracked another bull for him for about 4 hours this morning which turned out to be a non fatal shot....


Hunting has not been happening...

Brad, didn\'t you know you have to be at least 5 miles from a road to shoot elk??? :lol:

600 feet is a little sickening though...that is ridiculous!
 
Back from the long weekend. went to couple spots the produced last year but little to no sign. Did call in a couple hunters that must not know about wind direction. We moved to a new area and were into elk Sunday just couldn\'t get them to commit the last 20yrds. going to take this next weekend off then be back at it the last week of the season.
 
Well I?m back from the state of blow-downs.

My legs look like somebody tried to amputate then with a chisel and hammer from crawling over and under all the blow-downs.

Weather was unseasonable hot with plenty of rain to keep everything green.

The elk sign for the most part in my area was old with very little fresh mixed in. Worked one bull for several days but he would only respond once and he was in a blow-down fortress making it impossible to get close?never could get him to come out and play (for the most part the elk where non-responsive).

Moved around some but ran into about the same thing at other locations (not sure if the elk moved to higher ground or what).

Talked to a few other hunters and they were running into the same situation?one camp had a 5x5 and that?s all I saw for elk down.

Had a great time and the best campsite you would ever want to see.
 
AHHHH OK. I need an analyse.
It was 706 and first bugle hit off. They were about 400 yards away. I sprinted up a hill to a water hole and saw 4 bulls and 2 cows playing. I got behind a tree and started mewing. The cow and I started talking and there was this elk screaming his head off in the trees behind the water hole. Anyways, after a few minutes of this the bulls in the water hole wandered off, but that other bulls was responsive to my mewing. Lots of chuckles. Well I get within about 40 yards (can\'t see him) and I mew a few times and he barks???????
Anyways, we talk back and forth, but light is fading quick so he starts bugling and I hit him with a challange. This is without a bugle tube mind you. He just chuckles more???? We did this for a while. He came within about 35 yards, but I had to back out because of the sunlight. What the heck is up with the barking and chuckling in response to my weak challange.

Bark- He\'s telling you to show yourself. Chuckles mean \"come to me\" (to your cow call).

This is one of those scenarios where I would actually consider putting up my decoy as a shield, and charging right at him while mewing.
 
Yep - go right at him. dont worry about noise. Just mew a few times as your approach and he will be standing there.
You wont have much time to shoot

\"That was me just messing with you\"! LOL!

But seriously, in all my years of hunting, I have never had a bull give out a nervous bark and follow it with chuckles. And for sure, I have never had one give chuckles in response to a challenge bugle. Are you sure it wasn\'t grunts instead of chuckles? A bark can mean show yourself. But remember it is a NERVOUS reaction. And usually if you can\'t show yourself or give them a reason for sticking around, they simply drift off into never never land.

You make a good point. It could have been and most likely was a grunt. I think I just convinced myself it was a bark.

Let me tell you about these \"challange bugles\" too.
I am silly and only brought one call out. It\'s a looser latex call that I can get good cow call and some more immature bugles. Also me being silly, I didn\'t have my bugle tube. So I was cupping my hand and not trying to scream too hard because it would make odd noises.


So I would make these spike like challange bugles and that\'s when he would respond with chuckles or the grunt.

It was a fantastic experience, but that\'s why I wanted to ask all about this, so I could learn how to do it different next time.



Jeff and Brad. I did run in closer to him. I cut in about 20 yards like I was charging him. I made a bugle and started raking too. Then I went back to mewing.

This bull had no idea what I was doing, but he never left and kept talking.
 
Got into them again today guys.

I got to my spot and no sooner than I got set up I had what looked to be like the same group from last night crossing a ridge at about 60 yards ahead of me.

They were too far out and I couldn\'t catch them, but they were heading to where I saw them last night. So that\'s good. .

Well they clear the ridge and I take 3 steps and look ahead of me....150 yards ahead of me there is a giant 5x5 making his way into the timberline that I am on. I slowly start making me way towards him and he stops. Not sure if he heard me or wanted to feed, look, or listen, but I used trees as blind spots and snuck in on him to 59 yards.

His head was hidden behind a tree and body was wide open. There were 3 little branches in the lane and my max is 50. So no arrow was thrown.
I had a lane to my left where if he would have continued I would have had a 40 yard shot....

He didn\'t. He went directly up the ridge towards where I found them last night.


After he left I went out into a burn area and was able to stalk in on 17 elk. They were moving up the cliff way too fast and the wind was about to change. So I put them to bed with my binos and will figure out what I am doing tonight here soon. This is driving me Loco.

I\'m so close!
