Back from the weekend hunt. It was a great hunt we were into elk every day. Monday morning my wife and I set out into an area that we called two spikes and a cow into. Plans changed in a hurry when I opened up the truck door and herd a bull screaming in the clear-cut we sat in the night before. Told the wife to get ready, we need to get to the clear cut before they decide to leave. As we neared the cut the bull had already worked his way back into the trees. We hustled around to try to get in front or at least get on his same level. When we gained some elevation I let out some soft cow calls and got three bulls to answer back two of them with in 150yrds, I looked at my wife and said here we go. Know mind you this is my wife\'s first elk hunt ever. Thinking that I could get one of these guys to come check us out, we stayed there and cow called for about ten minutes. two of the bulls went quite but the bigger sounding bull would answer me ever time but was not getting any closer. We decided to move in on the big bull and get into his zone. with good wind we moved up another 70yrds set up and let out soft cow call, he answered right back about 60yrds in front of us in thick pine trees. I told my wife get ready he is coming with a couple more soft calls it was evident that he was not coming out of the trees. So I grabbed my bugle and thought I would challenge him, being this close he wont have a choice but to come run me off. As we are playing cat and mouse with the big guy we hear something to are left, here comes a cow followed by a 5x5 20yrds, we draw I get him to stop dang neither one of us has a shot. I start to kneel down to try to get a shot and they bust me. Back to the big boy. The bugles had no effect on the big guy so we took a chance and moved in closer and set up again, gave a couple more cow calls he would answer, we are about 50yrds from him know. There is a row of pine trees that we can not see through that he is on the other side of. Wife\'s says there he is I see his legs he is coming, he would get right to the edge and stop turn go back into the trees the whole time screaming at us. then all of the sudden here some a cow out of the trees followed by a different 5x5, we both draw but could get them to stop in the shooting lane we had. Then here he comes the 6x6 following the same route the cow just did, we draw again, 5 more steps we have him. Not to be he turns before the lane and back into the trees he goes. By this time his cows had enough and started to head out of there with him in tow. We followed the group for another hour getting within 80yrds a couple more times but just couldn\'t get closer for the shot. Man what a mourning. We are heading back up Thursday to see if can get back on them.
