2014 is lined up to be one of the greatest years of my life in regards to hunting.

I have drawn an Elk hunt for September 1-15th in New Mexico and an Antelope hunt August 23rd-31st, also in New Mexico. (Both bow hunts )
I am still waiting on my moose draw results in Maine, and an Elk hunt draw in Oklahoma, and a muzzleloader hunt in Oklahoma.

I also hunt whitetail in Oklahoma, Missouri, and sometimes head back home to New England to hunt Maine or Massachusetts with my family.
I also will be hunting Oklahoma and New Mexico fall turkey, Duck hunt New Mexico, and dove/quail every now and then.

So as you can see, I am lined up for a BIG YEAR.

I have many goals this year for myself not only in my kills, but goals in growing as a hunter as well.

Goals:
- Kill an antelope. I do not need a trophy kill, I just would love to say I was able to drop a nice antelope with a bow.
- Kill an Elk. My tag is for either sex and I would have absolutely no issue killing a cow on my first ever elk hunt.
- One fall turkey with a bow in either NM or OK. I have never been turkey hunting with a bow, so I would love to take one down. Tom or Jake, does not matter.
- Two meat does from Oklahoma and two mature bucks. Where I hunt in Oklahoma, it\'s also bow only, so it keeps the amount of hunters out there to a bare minimum. So while it\'s public land, I have a great chance to \"tend me own herd.\" Also note, last year was the first year I started whitetail hunting with my bow and I had the honor of killing my first bow buck. It was a very nice 5 pointer that I harvested in Mass. With that being said, my definition of mature buck and yours may be different. Being it\'s public land and still being very excited to take more bow bucks, I will not take anything less than 2 years old and 7 points.
- At least 5 duck hunts. I grew up in Massachusetts and was always big on sea duck hunting. So this will be my first time going for regular ducks. I am very excited.

Now some goals I want to reach dealing with myself and hunting:

- I grew up hunting Maine and Massachusetts, it was nothing, but large forests. Now that I am stationed out in New Mexico I deal with a whole new terrain. So my goal is to really learn the different layouts better and learn the fundamentals of glassing.
- Slow down my shots with a bow. Last year was my first year hunting with a bow and I found myself rushing to get my bow up and not focusing enough on ranging them and taking my time. That is by far going to be my biggest challenge, but I will do it.
- I want to use this site as often as possible and learn all the basics of elk hunting, so in the future, I can be a mentor myself.
- Get two of my friends their first whitetail. I have two friends who have been hunting for years, but have never been successful, so I want to be there to help them drop their first one! I also have a friend who is a very experienced hunter, but has never killed him a nice whitetail buck, so I would like to be able to help him with that.
- Last and certainly not least, make new friends, have fun, and just always stay positive. Hunting is one of, if not my biggest hobby and because of it, I have met some great people and had some great life experiences. I just hope to continue it.

Sounds like you will be busy. Good luck on your goals. Don\'t forget the first and most important goal to just \"enjoy\" your time hunting.

You are right and I wil100% enjoy every minute of this year.

Prep, scouting, hunting and all! :dance2:

I agree, you are going to be very busy this year..... good luck, I am very excited for you! more than a little jealous :D

I got very antsy today and had some free time, so I am heading out to my spot in Oklahoma. I just want to make sure my cameras are taking pics and of the areas they should be taking them of. Then I can start checking them monthly. I also want to check out a few spots I wanted to last time I was here.

Colorado Russ, it stinks our schedules couldn\'t line up. I\'d love to show you around.

Man oh man am I livid!!!!

So I finally make it to Oklahoma and it starts raining. No big deal, but now starts the fun stuff. The WMA I hunt is well off the beaten path. Well I\'m doing my average \"back road \" speed and the road changes from tar to farm road. Well this change is down a hill. Well because it\'s been raining here for a while, the top two to three inches were mud. Well, I learned this when I tapped my brakes to slow down. Nothing happened, but my truck slowed down just enough to start a little wiggle, which then got worse and I pretty much was skidding down the hill sideways... After some combat corrections, I was able to avoid the cliffs on both sides of the road.....

Anyways, I make it to my first camera as first thing I see is \"no memory\". So I\'m thinking \"uh oh... It wasn\'t formatted\"

So I slap it in my laptop... \"12500 pictures\". Turns out a branch decided it wanted to be the star of the show....

So I transferred all the pictures, deleted them, and trimmed up all around that camera. She is now good to go and I am happy she worked. Great thing, 12500 pictures only ate up half of my battery. Bad thing is it stopped 3 days after I dropped the camera in the woods and it was insanely tracked up... So I missed a lot.

Well, the second camera and my honey hole cheered me up. Plenty of deer, TONS OF SIGN, and some other \"treats\" that I will post when I get home and upload the pics.

I honestly love my honey hole. I\'ve never been in so much sign in my life. The entire area is just covered with deer poop, rubs, and scraps. This will be a good year.

Lol, doesn\'t sound like you should be too livid! Good thing you decided to head out there though, better to find out now than a day before the season opens :D

I just had this feeling :D
I will give it a month now and head back out!!!

I really want to take these out of there though.......

YOTES!!!! and what looks to be a bobcat? :downthumb: :downthumb: :downthumb:
I need to make them go away....

These look tasty though :upthumb:

and now the good stuff...

I don\'t want to post it all because lurkers might come find my area, so I will put up a few :D

I am pumped that I had deer moving at both spots.
Now I will let them sit for a while and get excited to see some grown racks next time :D

I need some Mulie deer experts....

I keep looking at these pictures from yesterday and this one doe keeps bothering my because of her time on the camera and ear size/body size.

Is this a WT or Mulie....

Yup. Mule deer

Thanks Brad.

I guess my next question for you guys is, how much different from WT do they taste?
The place I hunt has a few mulies on it, not many, and I can legally use my \"Deer\" tags to get them.

I\'ve been told mule bucks are much gamier, but I would also not hesitate to drop one if I see one.

idk. the only mulie I have ever shot, was from Utah, and it was the tastiest deer I have ever tasted.......

haha way to throw it for a twist!!!

I think if I see a mulie doe out there, I will let it pass, but if I have a mulie buck come in.... game over.... (unless it\'s small :tease: )

I am at a point in my life where I can fill my freezer with does and actually look for some nice wall hangers.....

All I have now are little 5 and 6 pointers all in my garage! Now granted, I would not change those for the world, but I think it\'s time to put some big boys in there too :D

I just don\'t want to sound wrong. I have loved every second of every hunting trip I have been on and every animal I have taken has been a prize to me!!

I have decided that next weekend, I am going to take a few people out to the WMA and we are going to try to reduce the coyote and hog population

Great news! I was talking to the Manager/Biologist who is in charge of the WMA I hunt in Oklahoma. They are acquiring another 10K acres

So now it just extends the giant parcel of land I have pretty much all to myself right now.

I also extended my services with anything he needs help with. That way I can get a great inside scoop. Who knows land better than a man who hunts it or a man who gets paid to manage/study it!!!

Yippy!
