2014 is lined up to be one of the greatest years of my life in regards to hunting.
I have drawn an Elk hunt for September 1-15th in New Mexico and an Antelope hunt August 23rd-31st, also in New Mexico. (Both bow hunts )
I am still waiting on my moose draw results in Maine, and an Elk hunt draw in Oklahoma, and a muzzleloader hunt in Oklahoma.
I also hunt whitetail in Oklahoma, Missouri, and sometimes head back home to New England to hunt Maine or Massachusetts with my family.
I also will be hunting Oklahoma and New Mexico fall turkey, Duck hunt New Mexico, and dove/quail every now and then.
So as you can see, I am lined up for a BIG YEAR.
I have many goals this year for myself not only in my kills, but goals in growing as a hunter as well.
Goals:
- Kill an antelope. I do not need a trophy kill, I just would love to say I was able to drop a nice antelope with a bow.
- Kill an Elk. My tag is for either sex and I would have absolutely no issue killing a cow on my first ever elk hunt.
- One fall turkey with a bow in either NM or OK. I have never been turkey hunting with a bow, so I would love to take one down. Tom or Jake, does not matter.
- Two meat does from Oklahoma and two mature bucks. Where I hunt in Oklahoma, it\'s also bow only, so it keeps the amount of hunters out there to a bare minimum. So while it\'s public land, I have a great chance to \"tend me own herd.\" Also note, last year was the first year I started whitetail hunting with my bow and I had the honor of killing my first bow buck. It was a very nice 5 pointer that I harvested in Mass. With that being said, my definition of mature buck and yours may be different. Being it\'s public land and still being very excited to take more bow bucks, I will not take anything less than 2 years old and 7 points.
- At least 5 duck hunts. I grew up in Massachusetts and was always big on sea duck hunting. So this will be my first time going for regular ducks. I am very excited.
Now some goals I want to reach dealing with myself and hunting:
- I grew up hunting Maine and Massachusetts, it was nothing, but large forests. Now that I am stationed out in New Mexico I deal with a whole new terrain. So my goal is to really learn the different layouts better and learn the fundamentals of glassing.
- Slow down my shots with a bow. Last year was my first year hunting with a bow and I found myself rushing to get my bow up and not focusing enough on ranging them and taking my time. That is by far going to be my biggest challenge, but I will do it.
- I want to use this site as often as possible and learn all the basics of elk hunting, so in the future, I can be a mentor myself.
- Get two of my friends their first whitetail. I have two friends who have been hunting for years, but have never been successful, so I want to be there to help them drop their first one! I also have a friend who is a very experienced hunter, but has never killed him a nice whitetail buck, so I would like to be able to help him with that.
- Last and certainly not least, make new friends, have fun, and just always stay positive. Hunting is one of, if not my biggest hobby and because of it, I have met some great people and had some great life experiences. I just hope to continue it.
