Iccyman001\'s 2014 hunting journal

What a night! We did some night recon into my areas to pull my cameras and I am PUMPED about a weeks worth of pictures.... over 200 pics, at least 11 different bucks, PLENTY of pregnant does, and only one yote this time.

Also, on the way in I saw 16 deer and 4 GIANT hogs.

land must be cheap in okie, for the state to buy up such a big chunk. good luck on the thinning project. what do you use on them hogs? with all this talk of hog hunting, I am hatching a plan to go see a new best friend :D never been hog hunting before.....

See, back in Florida I would use my .223 for all the pigs, but that was close range. Out in OK I have spots that could reach out to 400+, so I might bring the .270 or the new .308 to try out.

I\'d say I would bring out the .300 win mag, but that is beyond an overkill

my 300 win mag is the only rifle I own...... I bet wind is a factor there at 400 plus yards!

Well guys, it\'s 1:53AM and I am about to head out to Oklahoma with a couple of buddies for some pig/coyote hunting.

I\'ll probably just set them up to do some killing and I am going to use this time for a full day of scouting and hiking around. I packed myself a pack around 55lbs, so I will be getting a good feeling of where I am at! That way I know what to keep working on for my other hunts :D

Hey Dan. Yeah, our timing wasn\'t good over Memorial weekend. When I passed the exit to go South, I could barely read the exit sign because it was raining so hard. Gotta love those muddy OK roads!! Don\'t think I would\'ve gotten very far in my wife\'s Honda Accord!

Glad to hear about the land expansion and I\'ll definitely try to get down there once over the summer and again during November hunting season.

Sent you a text about the hog hunting.

One little piggie is going to market!! Texted Dan and he sent a pic of what looks like a nice smoker pig - 40 or 50 lbs. Hard to judge from the pictures and may be bigger.

Congrats Dan - starting 2014 off right!

I cant even begin to explain how fantastic today was, it was exactly what the doctor ordered!

I went off to Oklahoma with two of my really good friends and two of my troops from work.
The goal was to kill some pigs, coyotes, and for me to scout!

We arrived in the woods at around 6:30 and I dropped the first pair of guys off at a spot I figure would produce some pigs, sure enough, 45 minutes into the hunt, they see two pigs. :upthumb:

They tried timing their shots, but one shot before the other. Direct hit for the first guy and the second missed by a HAIR!

While this was going off I dropped the other two guys off at some small water holes and as I was walking out of the woods I jumped a beauty of a doe!

Well, I went and checked my cameras and found more coyotes and some great deer!!!!

Well, after I checked my cameras I found out the pig was down, so I went over to help them drag it out!

We didn\'t have an official scale, but I am thinking.... 80lbs? It may have just seemed heavier than it was, but 80 sounds fair :dk:

Here are the two guys I dropped off at that spot.

I was just super happy that we were able to get this. I went out on a whim with this whole trip because those pigs on my camera was the first time I had ever seen them, also, coyotes are never easy to kill. SO I was worried my friends wouldn\'t have a good time, but as you can see, they were happy so I am too.

WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

then we went to another spot and the other guys were already tuckered out, so I set them all up on this giant ridge and told them I wanted to go explore.

I crept down these STEEP ridges to a dried up river bed creek, it looked like after these last huge rain storms there was a bunch of run off. Well I heard a noise which I thought was a hog and I ended up catching something out of the corner of my eye......

the first thing I noticed was the skill and then I noticed how WIDE the rack went out. I was like a kid in a candy store!!!!!

I dug it out and here is what I found....

MAN WAS I HAPPY!!!!! I was grinning ear to ear knowing there are bigger bucks in here. I know there are good size bucks, but this just really got me even MORE motivated

Here is where the cherry was added on top.... I was making some noise while I was cleaning it off and putting the head in my pack. Well, I buckle my buckles on and throw my pack on (not trying to be quiet) and I look up and see movement. I froze, and not 20 yards from me is this doe just walking along slowly with no care in the world. Either she didn\'t see or hear me, or she just knew I wasn\'t going to bother her, but man, it was just such a great touch. I am smiling ear to ear with my find and then I am caught in the middle of nowhere with this beautiful doe.

Great day!

Hey Russ, I read your text and if you can escape for a day, then I will be sure to do the same. I can try to show you around the area as much as I can and maybe we can find us a coyote or hog :upthumb:

I am very pumped about the expansion. I am waiting for the guy who manages Sandy to call me back. I am going to help him set up parking lots and other stuff for the new land. I might use that time to be the first to scout it as well

nice pics! definitely a nice score on the skull! did they happen to see anymore hogs?

Great thread, Dan!

I\'ve been chasing pigs for a couple weeks now...they have managed to elude me

Looking forward to following along with your adventures! :upthumb:

We definitely tried to use a few things to our advantage out there.....
We hunted high ledges over waterholes, plus we were anywhere from 60-200 yards out. He shot that one at 60-70 yards I believe. Good luck getting a pig!

Yep! They saw a few more and head some other ones as well. I am pretty excited being it was our first time hog hunting out there. I think we may have a new summer activity :upthumb:

I wish I knew more about scoring because I\'d love to figure it out! I may have to bust out a tape measure

good to know! I am game for driving upteen miles to shoot a pig or two..... also, based on mine, i\'d say around 150ish for the skull.

I want to get a hunt or two more in there so I know for sure there are plenty of pigs and that I get on them all time ;) I would love to be able to take anyone at anytime in here and get them hogs!!!!

Someone else just told me around 150 for the skull too and I nearly lost it!!! I NEED TO FIND MORE JUST LIKE HIM

that is a nice skull for sure, whether found or shot! finding one is way cool! as far as pigs go, let me know when you want to show me around :D
