Iccyman001\'s 2014 hunting journal

I\'m sitting here at some dirt track races watching sprint cars, yet I\'m online looking at Maines website waiting for moose draw results to be shown...

good luck!

Thanks!

No dice this year! Now I am just waiting on the Oklahoma draw results July 2nd and it\'s go time.

This hunting season is sneaking up on us slowly :thewave:

Dan, did you put in for a controlled hunt too in OK? Just curious on the draw results since archery is OTC.

Russ
I put in for an Elk hunt and for a 2 day muzzleloader hunt at Sandy!

Cool. I\'ll be anxious to hear about the MZ hunt if you get drawn - # of tags, success,... I don\'t think they allow any other hunting while the controlled hunt is going or I\'d try to plan a weekend archery trip 11/1 and 11/2. I\'d like to get in there before quail opener on 11/8 but rut action won\'t kick in until around Thanksgiving(usually)!

I will be sure to let you know. I believe last year was around 1300 applicants and 35 drawn
I am mostly interested in drawing that because then I have some KEY spots I can now hunt that I cant hunt with a bow...

I will have cameras out at all time, so no matter what time you want to come, I can have some due diligence in for you.
You are also spot on with the rut starting. They were all out during the day and had me going nuts :tease:

I am heading out to my WMA tomorrow with my fianc? for a full day of scouting and hiking. She wont hunt, but I love that she wants to go hangout in the outdoors with me

I had such an amazing day scouting, hiking, and pulling my cameras with my fianc?. We saw 7 different bucks today and two MONSTERS in the area I found that skull. There is a lot of big deer moving in there and I want to get a camera up...

Anyways, here are some picture from the camera.

The pigs...

the turkeys

and the deer....

I am not going to bore you with all the does I have on camera, and I am not showing all my big bucks, but...

Some fawn action..

some does

Now here is one deer I would love to see and not have the picture blurry. I first picture is blurry, but his front in sags lower than the rump, so I like it...

then look at this with his head turned, it\'s blury, but I think its wide...

then here are a few extras

I am losing it right now......

I took some pictures of one of the monsters with my SLR. I thought they were too far away, but I zoomed in and this is the biggest deer I have ever seen in my life and its still early june.....

I wish I could show you all some how...I sent a bad video of it to Russ!

So today I went down to hang a camera where I saw all of these monster bucks and I came face to face with two of them, 15 feet away.....

I was still hunting (hogs) and scouting my way down to the area and right at the bottom was a massive buck. He heard me, but didn\'t see me, so I had time to range him and count his horns.... 15 feet and he was a beautiful 11pointer.... his rack was not as wide as the bucks rack in my original post. The wind was at my back and sure enough he took off about our 45 second stand off.

After he went into the woods, I snuck down to where he was and took a knee. Not 30 seconds later I heard a giant explosion come from the woods to my right and it was another MASSIVE 8 pointer running right at me....
Luckily he turned hard right about 12 feet from me, otherwise he would have been eating a .308 round.

I am super excited about this area. I have now seen 7 LARGE bucks down there and their racks are far superior to the ones on all of my other cameras. While my other bucks are just starting, this bachelor group are all large and full.
      :thewave:

I hope you can still locate them come fall. I have had several nice buck pics around my farm some for 3 years in a row of the same buck. I have noticed after their horns get hard they change movements and I never see them. The one I saw for 3 years and had several pics of, I never seen him in person. I hunt for 3 months every fall and of all the trips down the driveway at night you would think I would see him sometime. Ghosts I say.

Okay, okay Dan - I\'ll meet you down there a couple of weekends to hunt!! :D
You may need someone to translate \'Okie\' for you in case you run into any of the locals.

The video was a little shaky - why was that? ;) I could see them pretty good and I think your pics here show the potential with almost 4 months of growth left before archery even opens. Bet there will be quite a few fawns too given your cameras haven\'t shown many predators other than the hogs and occassional \'yote.

Gonna be a long summer but in a good way!

I look forward to taking you out! I am very excited about these spots I have set up this year. I have no excuse not to shoot a nice buck in there and a couple of meat does. I should also have no issue putting you into some good spots when you come. I am just very antsy for these controlled hunt results to come out. If I can take a muzzleloader into the area that I found all of these large bucks, then it opens up a whole new playing field for me. At the same time though, I want to get these guys with my bow....

I will keep you in the loop of my future travels

Terry, I am not looking forward to when the group of these bucks break up at all. I have been carefully scouting the surround area though, so I can figure out their movements as much as I can. That way I can stay on top of a few of these bucks and make sure I find them once the season opens :upthumb:

If you ever need help hunting that farm in IOWA though

I am getting wild..... I bought a leftover mulie tag and about to set up a Missouri hunt with my best friend!

I went antelope scouting today on some public land and found 4 shooter bucks and a doe!!!! It was just a preliminary scout, but I am SUPER pumped I found them. Less than 8 weeks....

Tomorrow is my final draw results!!!

It\'s for Oklahoma.... both an elk hunt and a muzzleloader deer hunt.... I am crossing my fingers :dance2:
