Well, this past Sunday and Monday were very fun and intense.
Sunday we woke up and went out to Oklahoma with the dogs for some hiking and turkey scouting.
It was a fun time and the dogs had a ball, but it immediately got sad when we noticed a truck in the area that we had planned to hunt the next day....
We were glassing for deer on a ridge about a mile away from where we wanted to hunt we first saw the truck, so we decided to head down and investigate.....
Sure enough it was three people who were building a blind in the exact spot we had planned on setting up the next day.
My heart dropped, but we went and talked to them. They started right off with the \"we have been hunting this spot for years blah blah blah\" but once they realized I was not a bozo and was a just being polite by talking to them, they calmed down. I told them how I had planned on hunting there and I didn\'t know anyone else even knew about the spot. I told them that I will just go on the other side of the roost about 1000 yards away from them.
I think they were a little confused that I was being to nice and offered to move well away from them, but I am not out there for conflict, I am out to hunt. They told me they were filming for a TV show that will start out next month on the outdoor channel. I can\'t for the life of me remember the name though.....
SO anyways, we finished off our day hiking and went off to bed.
I did not sleep one wink that night and I was so antsy and I think subconsciously upset I couldn\'t hunt my spot.
Well, alarm went off at 4AM, we got a quick subway breakfast, then went out to set up. We had about a 1.5 mile hike in with all of our gear and it was crazy doing it off the moonlight. We battled some big cliffs and draws, but we made it happen!
We got set up, put up decoys and started the wait. 30 minutes before shooting light we started to do some gobbling and MAN were those birds fired up.
They started going absolutely wild!
After playing with them for a while, they started flying down......
This is where it got very sad.... half the birds went where I WANTED to be hunting and half came to me....
8 jakes came my way and the 3 toms that I had been watching went towards the other people....
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.... :ill:
I already knew what had happened, but we decided to wait longer. We hunted until about 10 AM then decided to go out and find a new area. We left our stuff down there though because we knew they would have to come back to roost that night, so we would set up on them before they hit their trees.
We drove down to where we had planned to set up and yep..... 2 beautiful Rios down.... very nice turkeys.....
We sat there and talked with them for about 30 minutes. Again they were very thankful for me going where I did and not setting up on them.
We also talked about other hunts and turns out they had hunted the same unit I did in NM for elk.... small world!
I showed them some pictures of my big buck that I shot this year, we all congratulated each other on everything and went our ways.
We went and got more subway then we went and did some run and gunning! We checked lots of spots, set up on a few different sets of birds, but no luck.
Mind you it was 94 degrees, sunny, and 20-40 mph winds.
We didn\'t give up though. We probably hiked a total of 10-13 miles that day then decided that our game plan would still be to sit down near where they roost and hit them before they flew up.
We go into our stand at 4pm and waited.....and wait....and waited......
Guess who never showed up :downthumb:
I am guessing because they shot the two big toms and scared off the lead hen, there was no way they were coming back that night.
All in all it was a fantastic time. Saw lots of birds, hiked lots of miles, found a good shed, and learned a lot of turkey hunting.
Nothing is easy about where I hunt in Oklahoma and I think that is why I am so addicted to it. It\'s always a challenge.
Until the next hunt........
