Gary, Are we going to have to make a trip to Oklahoma to join Dan?

I put 3 cameras out there today. 1 honey hole and 2 new spots.
Once elk season is over 2 more cameras will go out there. I am trying to open up as much landscape as I can and find lots of deer.
That way if I have visitors...... I can send them in the right direction

Dan, I can send you another camera when it gets closer to OK season. Not sure if I\'ll be putting mine out for elk or not. Jim has us covered for archery antelope.

Russ

terry, if you are game for a trip to okie, i might think a little bit more serious about this! if i went, i would just take the wifes car to save a ton on gas. a boned out deer doesnt take up much space!

I gave a brief write up about my scouting trip, but I always feel like I take away from the idea of this thread when I post my stuff elsewhere.

Alan and I went up to northern NM to where we drew our tag and to where I shot my spike last year.

We got up there nice and early and got right into it. We went to the area that I shot my elk last year and it looked just as great as last year.
We found the area littered with rubs, tracks and poop.

It will definitely pay off again this year. We hung some cameras and kept on moving around!
We found a few good back up spots and found some elk in there too. We saw a nice cow and a very healthy bull who was already well on his way in velvet.
Then we found a final spot and it was an ALL STAR spot. I wish we had more time to scout it, but we will start it first next time.
IT JUST SCREAMED ELK.

I can\'t even tell you how excited I am about this elk hunt. It\'s such a great area and I am going to try as hard as I can to shoot another elk this year.

Here are some random pictures from the trip.

Our next trip will be in about 3 weeks and I can\'t wait to check the cameras!!!!!!!!
We will also be scouting a bunch more and finding more spots to hunt.

I am going to give this hunt my all, not only to get myself another elk, but to get Alan one too :upthumb:

Awesome report Dan! What made the new spot so good looking to you? The area you are planning to start in first on your next trip...?

Derek,
from the get go it\'s location location location location.

It\'s about a mile and a half in the woods, so it cuts out most of the hunters and pressure.
The land was just littered and trampled with solid game paths and it was all elk sign. Not to mention there were so many transition areas for them to move in-between two valleys.

I am not good with explaining areas, but all I can tell you is there are lots of elk in there and using it. I\'ll take more pictures next time and let me game cameras do the talking :upthumb:

dan, I hate to break this to you, but your area in nm looks way easier than my spot in id.... :D you better ramp up your exercises

SO I am already calling it, this year will be another fantastic year.

I drove out to Oklahoma today to check on my cameras.
Last year at this time it was dry, hot, and antler growth was around 1-3\".

Fast forward to this year......
There is TONS of water, the vegetation is taller than the deer are, and bucks are already starting out phenomenal on their head gear.

I don\'t want to post the early stages, I will start posting rack growth from my next pull, but MAN I am excited. The racks will be big and the deer will be healthy.

We saw 4 deer and 3 turkey on the trip, my wife and dogs had fun, and I have 84 days until my elk hunt. :upthumb:

Also, I learned Saturday that the buck I shot last year was in the top 10 archery bucks taken in Oklahoma last year. (Scored and submitted that is)
Not everyone sends their numbers in, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Awesome Dan, congrats!

Thanks guys!

It\'s sitting at #9 right now and they run the year until 2014.
It\'s not like I win a cool prize, but I think it\'s really neat!

Hard work pays off :upthumb:

I can\'t wait to see what kind of pictures are on my cameras tomorrow.

I have two up there, Alan has two, and I am going to hang 1 or 2 more.

TOMORROW SHOULD BE A GREAT DAY.... :upthumb:

Today was a super awesome day.

Alan and I were able to put some GREAT scouting time in our elk unit.

My waterhole looks good, another one of my cameras was AMAZING, and Alan had a GREAT spot too.
We moved some cameras around, added another one, and are getting the patterning down....

Beware elk.... beware.....

We had over 16 bulls on camera today, but I don\'t want to say the exact amount

SEPT WILL BE HUGE :train: :dance2:
