Antelope, Bear, and ELk......

I am on the fence about doing a mulie hunt. I\'ve been told a few times now about their meat not being the greatest, even more when it\'s compared to WT. So I am thinking I will just save my time so I can use it on an out of state whitetail hunt.

NOW WE WAIT!!!!!

Dan a guy I worked with shot a mulie in Montana a couple of years ago a said it was better than any Wt. he ever ate. I have never ate it before myself.

Good luck in your draws. When do you find out.

April 29th...

It\'s ok though. I have enough projects and things to look forward to so I can stay occupied.
My Euro mount should be done here soon, so that should bring some excitement! :upthumb:

dan, the only mulie I have taken. was the best deer I have ever had! she had one thing going for her, she ate all night long in the alfalfa fields just outside the ranch I was at in Utah....
maybe I should put in for nm this year, since I have a place to hunt

Gary,
I have never had it, but I would imagine a lot of it deals with what they are eating. Maybe I should just do mule deer hunt for this year, kill one, and try it :upthumb:

As for NM, I throw this out to you and anyone else on this site. I will gladly help anyone pick units, scout units, put in the same units I am doing, etc etc etc.

I know the draw odds for here are a little off, but you get your money back if you don\'t draw (minus the $7 service fee.)

So it\'s always worth a shot :upthumb:
I would be pumped for someone to try it out. Mostly because I know any one of you guys would do the same for me.

dan, when I researched nm last year. I thought they kept the hunting license fee, or whatever it was called, that they make you buy before you could apply. if I am only out $7, sign me up!
seriously, pm me with your unit and I will put in....

Let me look this information for you so I make sure I am correct, but I thought you didn\'t have to buy the license until AFTER you are drawn. Let me do my research and I will let you know. I will also respond to your email as soon as I am done.

Gary,

you are correct and that blows my mind...
That is very off putting. The way states do their draws and tag process will always confuse me when they have stuff like this.

Sorry I had the wrong information and I wish that non-res tag was cheaper so people would want to apply.

Are there any units you stand a chance at drawing with no PPs?

New Mexico is not a PP state. It\'s just a state that has a lower NR draw percent.
So any unit, whether it\'s the best or the worst, a NR has a chance of drawing.

Interesting, maybe I should give that a shot. I\'ve always heard it\'s a good place for vocal bulls.

May have to apply for a tag, $57 isn\'t too bad. Always heard good things about New Mexico.
If you decide on it, let me know. I can let you know the exact spots I put in for. One unit was the one I shot my spiker in last year. ES tags and a very nice elk population. Not as many trophies though.
The other unit was an absolute monster unit.

I also have lots of due diligence on other units too.

thanks for looking dan. its too bad, I was getting excited! I thought that I remember it was closer to $80. I am going to check again. I might just go for it anyway, since I wouldn\'t be going in totally blind and could be hunting with somebody I know, well sorta know :angle:

I\'ve been looking at their website. I was looking at unit 51 and 52. May just have to put in. Was your unit very crowded?

51 is where I hunted last year and where I put in for this year.
It\'s 180 tags, but so much land to cover and elk spread throughout.
I also know the areas where it\'ll be crowded and that I want to stay away from and I also know the areas that are much less touched.
One being where I killed mine... :upthumb:

You have three choices when picking in NM so I picked:
Archery/Unit 51/ Sept 1-15th
Archery/Unit 51/ Sept 16-30 (or something like that)
Archery/Unit 16C/ Sept sometime.

I know of people who have hunted 52 and 53, with more enjoying 53. It\'s definitely one of those units where you have to put in the work though. Tough terrain, but definitely elk.

Gary, the offer stands for anyone! If you guys don\'t put in this year, maybe we can all put in for a group application next year or something.

so I just refreshed my memory on nm application regs.... yes a person has to buy their hunting license at the time of application, $65, but it also says that it will be refunded if unsuccessful in drawing a tag, if.... you specify that in your application. nonresident application fee is $13. and if you hunt national forest or blm, that\'s another $5. so if drawn, total cost of $618 for nonresident. I didn\'t look but I bet there is a convenience fee on top of that, to be expected.

I knew I remembered something about not having to fully buy a license and most of it getting refunded.
There should be no convenience fee... I just bought my stuff online and did not pay one.

also dan, units 51 and 52 were the units that I was looking at last year..... too funny! and they aren\'t that bad of a drive for me, still closer than Idaho... well, except the gilla-16..... fyi, the deadline for the application is march 18th.
dan, I will put in for those same draws. :shh:
