Just applied for NM tags...

Is unit 51 considered a mature bull or quality mature bull tag? Just trying to figure the cost of the NR tag? Just got an account with NM and looking them over pretty hard.

steve, $548 plus the $65 hunting license, and $5 land use stamp, because its in a nat forest. the gilla, 16, area is considered the quality area. I don\'t remember if there was more of them. to find out you would have to go to there hunt code pages.

I\'m strongly considering it. I\'ve read about NM elk hunts and they\'ve always sounded fun. Just never researched the PPs. I had no idea you didn\'t have to have them. The price of tags are no more than Colorado or Idaho and if I don\'t get drawn I\'ve always got those options.

Steven,
Unit 51 is a standard area for the first hunt, the 1-14th period. The 15th-24th period is a HD hunt.
Unit 52 is a high demand
Unit 53 is standard

51 is an either sex tag.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am the same way Steven with the draw idea. If I don\'t get drawn, I find out fairly early and will have a back up plan to follow!

updated. steve, unit 51 15-24 in a quality elk draw, so its $760..... along with unit 16c.
dan, I need to know what dates you put in for 16c, the first half or the 2nd half of sept.

Gary,

My application is as follows:

Bow/ ELk-2-168 Unit 51 Sept 1-14th
Bow/ Elk-2-169 Unit 51 Sept 15th-24th
Bow/ Elk-2-248 Unit 16C Sept 1-14th

Let me know if there is anything else that I can tell you about.

dan, do you know what the population management list is about, in section 5 of the app?

I\'ve seen areas that needed elk numbers tended to, so if you don\'t draw you have a chance to be called in for the management hunt.

Not common, but it\'s there.

I clicked yes.

I am assuming they come later in the year. if anything, I might get a winter vacation....

Population Management Hunts
Residents and nonresidents wishing to be considered for Population Management Hunts for Barbary sheep, deer, elk, ibex, oryx or pronghorn antelope must select the 5th-choice option on the application. Applications must be completed by March 18, either online or by telephone.
Applicants must apply for at least one regular draw hunt choice to be eligible for the Population Management Hunt of the same species. By choosing this option hunters are indicating their willingness, if unsuccessful in drawing their 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice, to be placed on a list of eligible hunters for that species.
Should a Population Management Hunt become necessary, a NMDGF official will contact hunters to notify them of the hunt areas, dates, bag limit, allowable sporting arm and any other special restrictions. The hunter will be asked to accept or decline a hunt. If a hunter declines, another hunter will be contacted. Bag limits for Population Management Hunts will be primarily female animals, since these hunts are intended to reduce populations in specific areas.
Choosing a Population Management Hunt option is not a guarantee the applicant will be contacted for a hunt.

Gary,

I hope you get this. Even if I don\'t draw, I would come up there and show you my spots. It\'s a very cool unit and the elk numbers are there.
I have also found the spots that get away from the over-pressured spots and give you free range.

And if we both don\'t draw, we go for operation Colorado or Idaho!

Steven should get in on it too haha

yes he should!
that\'s the hard part, you might get 51 1-14th, I might get 16c 1-14th, and steve might get 51 15-24th. or we might all get nothing.... but if I do draw, its great knowing that I have a little inside intel!!! that\'s huge! like I said, I researched 51 last year and in my mind I was wondering where to go to get away from the crowds....

One thing that helps is how much leave time I have saved up.
If I were to get the early hunt and you got the later hunt, I could stay up there and help. Or vice versa, I could come up early and help you hunt, then I hit the second half.

We just will hope it doesn\'t work like that. IF you get 16, I will do backflips for you and come out to watch you shoot a B&C elk....

I will PM you about 51

that\'s the crazy thing about nm, anybody, in all reality, could get the gilla on their first try. but, I have no luck and do not gamble because of it. so, I am not holding my breath. but, man that would be fun!!!!!

and that\'s exactly right. For all we know, next year you will get it and I won\'t haha.
It\'s very interesting, but I do like that fact that they give a lot of the money back so you don\'t eat that.

We will still have to discuss our avenue for CO and ID, just in case. That way if we don\'t draw we can have our backup plan mostly sorted out.

AGAIN, ANYONE WILLING TO HUNT NM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I would be more than happy to help you all out in anyway.

most definitely, we will have a plan all ready in place if nm doesn\'t work out.
