March 18th is the deadline! April 28th is the draw.
You have plenty of time. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
I actually put in for a NM unit that has coues deer! I hope I get it because I would love to chase them with a bow.

Good luck out there

for me it is always:
unit 36 (where our honey hole is) i will faint if i ever draw this AGAIN!!
unit 51 never been, but i have a thumbtack on my friends spot
unit 15..never been or Unit 34, my old mountain bike spot

i donate to the valles caldera as well. archery only.

For you guys considering putting in for NM, you should make sure you understand the way NMDGF draws for tags, below is a link that describes it:
<!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/hunting/applications-and-draw-information/how-new-mexico-draw-works/\" onclick=\"window.open(this.href);return false;\">http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/hunting ... raw-works/</a><!-- m -->

You basically need to stratify your three hunt choices into high/medium/low draw demand hunts. In the past, NM published the draw statistics by pool (resident, NR guided, NR non-guided) but I can\'t seem to find it on their re-vamped website where you could easily stratify the draw demand. I\'m not sure if I\'m a moron, or it is not there because they made so many changes this year (i.e. there are only 2 archery hunts in each unit instead of 3). I have old draw statistics in excel, if anybody wants them (it\'s not apples to apples but will give you a general idea of the draw pressure in each unit). If you don\'t stratify the hunts and decide to put all 3 choices for extremely high demand hunts, you are basically pissing away your 2nd and 3rd choices.

I don\'t know much about units up north, but know a fair amount about units down south in the gila. Let me know if I can help.

Jeff,

Have you ever explored 16C?

You are spot on though. The units I put in for are basically high demand and then decent draw verse kill ratio.
Last year I drew unit 51 with it as my 3rd choice. I was surprised.

I am very interested on how this will all change though being they knocked it from 3 to 2 for archery hunts.

Good luck to everyone trying for NM hunts. And thanks to those of you sharing good advice. I\'m too much of an elk-hunting newbie to be of much help, but have hunted units 9, 50, and 6A, if anyone\'s interested. They aren\'t prime units, but elk are there. And at the very least, I know where NOT to go!!

Do you just hunt Elk in NM or do you chase other species as well?

I\'ve also hunted mule deer (units 29, 13, and 6A), and turkey (units 9, 10, 14, and 6A), and will hunt javelina for the first time this month.

Good luck on your Javelina hunt! Take lots of pictures :upthumb:

Iccy-I\'ve never hunted 16C, but have spent a lot of time in 16A and 23 and a fair amount of time in 16D and 15 and hunted 16E once. 16A, 16D and 15 all seem to get about the same amount of draw pressure, which is a lot. NR\'s have about a 1 in 20 chance of drawing. 23 is definitely a sleeper unit, as it doesn\'t get much draw pressure, it doesn\'t have the quantity of elk that those 3 do but there are some monsters in it (huge unit, so you better do some homework). That unit should definitely be on the back end of your app (i.e. 2nd choice = 23 2nd bowhunt and/or 3rd choice = 23 1st bowhunt). My hunting buddy will castrate me if he knows I\'m posting this. Rut is definitely rolling during the 2nd hunt. You will hear bugles during 1st hunt, but I\'ve never seen the crazy rutfest until back half of September.

Ahhh, plenty of people would say what I said about some of the other \"lesser\" Gila units, aka 16E, 17 and the 21\'s. It\'s not going to affect your draw odds, resident or non-resident. Sorry.

They were bugling first hunt last year, but being it was my first hunt ever, I wasn\'t sure if it was a lot or a little. I would imagine that the second part is nuts though. Maybe I will be lucky enough to draw this year.
I have a friend who gets fire wood in 16D and the sheds that they found this year was insanely huge. Easily over 400\"

My brother is on 36 right now bleating some trees on our property. He said the deer are thick and its likes petting zoo.
Land is too small to hunt.
