Last morning success! More pics posted...

After we got the stand, we got ready for the evening hunt.

Oh... what to do...oh... where to go....???

Well, remember in the post above I \'took note\' of what the other hunters told me?

I told Cole & Aaron the the elk werent going to tolerate the pressure that they were getting by those hunters.
I had an idea and we went somewhere else.

We drove to the area and off we went for the evening hunt....

We slipped along thru the timber, wind was good.
It was getting late and we had no responses to our calling.

Then! We heard a bugle!

We headed toward it...

We got fairly close but daylight was fading so we as a group decided to back out, and come back in the morning...

Sunday Morning - Sept 27 - Last day of the 2015 season.

Daylight found us slipping into the same area we left the bugles just 12 hours before.

About 6:45am we heard the same bull sound off!! Very close to where we left him.
We eased down the slope and checked the wind every minute or so.
He would bugle every minute or so.

We finally saw the bull and 3-4 cows.
Since the day was to be warm and sunny, I knew they would be moving into their bedding area very soon.
We watched them closely as they could only go one of two ways...

One way was good... the other not so much...

The started to move...

The good way!

And we were off chasing bugles!

We hurried to keep pace with them, but they had a straight line and we didnt.

I know the country like the back of my hand, [which is very helpful]
After about a mile, we had to go around a deep ravine - [and we lost some ground there]

Luckily the bull was still bugling every minute or so, but he was still 1/2 mile away.
We dashed thru the woods straight at him.

Then there were 2 more bulls bugling in the same area!

Uh... Oh... now what???!!!

We continued our course toward the nearest bull.
Then suddenly we realized he was coming right us - Downwind!!!

We ran downwind to cut him off... but only got a short ways when we saw elk about 50yds away!

*&^$#%^$)#%^$!!!!!

And they saw us too....

It was the bull with 3-4 cows from daylight.

Off they went.

The other two bulls were still bugling upwind so we peeled off that small group of elk and we were off to the races again!

Another 1/2 mile.... we were getting hot.

The herd would slow up, and we would catch up... the herd would move again and we would lose ground...

I would bugle occasionally to keep track of the herd.

Another 1/2 mile...

We were dogging them....

We came across a game trail that I knew went in the direction the herd was headed.

I told Cole and Aaron that we were going to race down the trail, mewing in hopes it would trick the bull that he lost a cow...

It worked.

As we were walking fast along this trail, I see movement to my left!!!

BIG BULL!!! Coming in fast!!! 30 yds out!!!

We stopped - He stopped

We froze...

I whispered to Cole \"Nock an arrow when he moves\"...

The bull moved - and turned to our left...

Cole nocked an arrow and drew while the bull was moving...

Congratulations to Cole!!! (And you too, teammate... ;) Too cool!

Other than a twisted knee requiring a brace for the first half of the season, an infected tear duct in my shooting eye, a mountain bike wreck where I landed on my head (helmet, thankfully!), was knocked out briefly and cracked two ribs, and the capper was when two homeless-looking guys decided to go backpack camping a mile up the side of a random mountain in a random basin where I was hunting some good bulls, put their substantial squatter\'s camp on the bench 70 yards from my waterhole-wallow treestand, and ran all the elk out, I had a good season. Passed up a couple slam dunk shots when I was afflicted with \"big bull disease\". Got my two 64 year old trad hunter couple each a moose, which was thrilling.

But Brad and Cole set the standard in our area this year. Great job!
