Thats a good eye! glad someone is giving an excuse for me to relive that memory. I first packed in regular team roping ropes and a fence stretcher. I got a 4 wheeler within about 3/4 of a mile but couldnt get it any closer. I got him pulled to the bank with that but had too much stretch in the ropes so I had to back out and go find chains and a comealong. ended up being about 75lbs worth of stuff I had to pack back into there in the dark which I was fine with because I was still on cloud 9. the chains and comealong got him out after a long struggle. You cant fully tell from the picture but its a sloped bank and the chain was taught keeping him from sliding back into the water. I got him cut up and started packing out. I only managed 3 loads before I had to be at work so I hung the last quarter in the shade and left the horns at this point I was on about cloud 1.5. Got back to hauling after work which was exhausting as I had been up at that point for about 36 hours and the bulk majority of those had been pretty labor intensive. I do remember fully appreciating the misery on the last load and wishing the packout had been worse so the memory would be more deeply embedded.

Hahahaha, I?ve been there and I?m sure others have as well. Amazing how you find a way to make it through and then look back and go ?it wasn?t THAT bad.?

Awesome story with a remarkable bull. Thanks for sharing!

What an experience! I'm glad you were able to get him recovered  :upthumb:

That is an awesome story and a great bull! Congrats on filling that OIL tag. It just seems right that he would end up in a tank, given that it was an OIL tag!

awesome bull...  gets me excited for sure..  i might have missed it in one of the other posts but im curious if ND uses a point system or if its random? i work up in ND and have considered trying to hunt up there for at least deer  but this story for me and im sure for others made the decision a bit easier... anybody aware of the deadlines for applying and know the draw odds??

No point system in place for our big 3. (big horn, elk & moose)
Non residents cannot apply for moose or elk. But you could buy raffle tickets for the Game Warden Museum drawing that gives away a state wide moose and elk permit. Thats the only way I know of for a Non resident to get one of these tags.

Nice bull congrats.

I had a deer one time cross a frozen stream with an inch of ice on it. I found him under the ice on the other side the next morning. The recover consisted of a hatchet, a canoe and lots of rope. The hardest thing was getting him in the canoe with me without sinking it. then my partner helped pull me across the ice to the other side. You just don't forget things like that. :)

Results dropped today. No luck for either my wife or I on elk or moose in North Dakota.... come on Montana!
