Operation: Rifle Accuracy

It\'s a lot of reading, but there is a ton of solid information for both long and short shots in there. Even if you had zero desire to shoot longer ranges, this is still a very solid combo. If I could go with any setup at this point for all North American big game, it would be a 300 Win Mag with that load. I currently use the 230 grain Berger Hybrid since I have the 300 RUM and they have been extremely impressive with shots both near and far.

I read the first 15 pages last night I will try to continue today. Some impressive shooting and lots of data.

Terry, I\'m guessing that you weren\'t able to reduce the tension on the Browning trigger to your liking? Mine trigger pull is probably very similar based on your description earlier in the thread.

If you did reduce the trigger poundage, what did it go down to and what was it originally set at? Just curious as this is something I need to do on my 7mm as well.

Appreciate all the info - good stuff!

My trigger was adjustable. It scaled at 4.25. The owners manual says it is adjustable from 3-6. I adjusted it as far as it would go and I got it down to 3.75. I bought the Timney spring set #602 that has a 1.5-2 & 2-3 springs. I have not installed them yet. I will try to get it done tonight and post the results tomorrow. I am shooting (pun intended) for a 2-2.5 pull.

I have read all the pages of the Longrangehunting link that Derek put up. I plan to get some Berger 215 Hybrids and work up a load. :mg:

Anxious to hear the results Terry. I would expect them to be shooters :upthumb:

So......I tore into the A bolt last night and replaced the factory spring with a Timney 2-3 pound spring. I started with that one first because I didn\'t want to be under 2 for a hunting rifle. It was easy to install. I set the adjustment screw for the lightest pull. When I reassembled it and tried it out  . It felt good :D . I put the scale to it after and it was pulling to 2 pounds 2 ounces. I am happy with that. Now I need to wait for a calm day and fire 5 more at 100 yards to see if the trigger did anything for my group.

Awesome Terry! How difficult is replacing the spring?

Easy.... I removed the screw that has a pin on it. It goes through the trigger and is what the safety lever catches on. I then pushed the pin out with a ball point pen that the trigger pivots on. Lift out the trigger remove and replace spring. then reassemble. Quick easy job with great results.

The trigger had a replaceable block on the end of the face that held the hammer. It was polished smooth and slightly rounded to minimize friction. I didn\'t mess with it any but was impressed with the design. The trigger seems crisp now and easy to pull. I cant wait to see if it makes any difference with my group on the factory ammo. I was holding pretty steady on the sand bags and had no idea when I broke the trigger last time. I might not see much difference but I do like the feel. :D

I am sure a good hand load will tighten things up. It might be a while before I get to that but I have all summer to play. :upthumb:

I picked up some 215 Gr Berger Hybrid bullets for $37 a box and some H1000 powder. :) Still have plans on playing with some long range shooting this summer. I burned off my CRP fields and can get a clear shot to 400yds now. I will have to range out some distances and build a backstop with dirt at the 400 distance. Having a Backhoe comes in handy for that. I will keep the shooting lane mowed through the summer. This is going to be fun. :upthumb:

Awesome Terry! Have you had a chance to shoot it with the trigger modification yet?

No. I am so busy with work and then all the helping of others that I do. I need to clone myself twice to get caught up. Some day soon I hope. I will continue my adventure on this thread you started if that is ok.

I ranged the field with my range finder and I think I can stretch it out to 500 yds :upthumb: There are some hills so I might have to make different lanes because 300 is in a dip.

I have been studying long range shooting, by watching many YouTube videos, :haha: :haha:

Absolutely, feel free to continue using this thread!

Youtube videos can be very helpful. Everyone has their own opinion on things, but you can learn a lot from guys like Bob Beck (Extreme Outer Limits) and the Gunwerks guys. Gunwerks has a bunch of Youtube videos on their website as well I believe.

I made it out to try the new trigger spring tonight. It felt good and shot a little better than the factory. Factory was 4lb 4oz. The timmney is 2lb 2oz. I blew the second shot. It was all operator error  but the other 4 were close enough to do the job.

Looks awfully promising Terry! A little load development and you should definitely have yourself a shooter :upthumb:
