Scouting Trip Reports

:problem:

Well... in my mind it was deadly grizzly bears and cougars and they were stalking me while I scouted....

Im thinking the elk chewed the bark on that tree

Seems pretty high though, doesn\'t it? I mean some of those marks are over Alan\'s head. I have to assume Alan isn\'t five feet tall, right? Kind of do look like bite marks, but that is a ways up in the air... :dk:

On a separate note, great idea mtnmutt and great posts Dan! This thread is going to fuel the fire for me over the next few months...

Here are two more pictures of the \"ferocious grizzly bear\" marks.

Derek,
I am so fired up for this year. I should have taken more pictures, but it was so beautiful up there.
I just am SO antsy to pull those cameras and see what I have moving around......

I might get a little \"picky\" depending on what I see....
I also can\'t wait to name them

I\'m the same way Dan...planning on getting some cameras up in June or July. I have such an itch to get up there, but with all the snow we have been getting I don\'t even know if I could get to our area right now.

that is some great looking elk country!

I failed by not taking pictures of the good places. Once we got into them we were on high elk alert and I got too excited

That\'s alien or poltergeist slime.

Any memory loss? Any pain?

I wasn\'t able to get quite where I hoped to on my little scouting adventure, still lots of snow in the Colorado high country. I spent most of my time around 10,000-10,500 ft and ran into lots of snow drifts towards the higher end of that. This was a brand new area to me and the drifts made the hard to follow an old loggers trail that I had found on Google earth, we\'ll be back in a few weeks after more of the snow melts. All in all, was a great day in the mtns with the pup!

My scouting trip wasn\'t nearly as productive as Dan\'s but I got some hiking in. The snow was out of where I was which is unusual for this early. I was in Oregon. lol....I am way more paranoid/secretive than anyone I know. I was close to where I posted that picture with all those cow elk in one camera shot. This area has always confused me. I was trying to find an area the bulls hang out in more frequently but I didn\'t see anything making me want to deposit a camera. It looks elky and there is sparse poop sightings. I know only a half mile from the corridor I was in the elk hit pretty hard but I wanted to find a transition zone between where they feed and bed. I struck out. That\'s part of the game though. In 100 scouting trips if 95 are a bust I am happy....happy to get 5 great looking spots to hunt. I figure I am just paying dues. This is a shot of the only spot I considered dropping a cam.

I am the same way. I can check 100 spots, but as long as I have a few nice ones to hunt at this year, then I am happy!!!!!!
My favorite part was just being in the woods, this was a good dose of what the doctor ordered.

Great pics, Dan and Anthony! Thanks for sharing. Anthony, great looking dog! Hopefully we\'ll be able to get together this winter with some other Backtrakers and kill some birds. I still have 2 setters. This is a pic of the best dog I ever had on a scouting trip. R.I.P., Jersey!

Gorgeous dog, love the coloration on her face!

We\'ll definitely have to make something happen this winter, I\'m sure others on here would love to get in on a bird hunt!

All of my scouting so far this year has been at low elevations as everything I usually hunt is under 20ft of snow. I have been able to turn up some pretty elky spots though. Rubzilla, right here  I\'m 6\'4\", have a monkey arms, and there are branches broken off 2\' over my reach.

x2!!!!

Big rub!!!!!

Alan is about 5\'10 (in the pics above) and he found one that was about two ft over his head too.

Will,

when you scout, your pictures make you look like they are straight from a L.L. Bean catalogue......

I look like a..........

Nothing like some shorts and stylish snake gaiters lol

My buddy is going to purchase a Startmyhunt map for his trophy rifle elk hunt. He also purchased a Swarovski 65mm spotting scope. We are working out the logistics for a scouting trip where our wives and kids stay in Glennwood Springs to visit the hot springs while we go scout one weekend. He will be doing much more scouting on his own, since he lives only a couple hours away from his unit.

I\'ve been looking at Google Earth reviewing a different backpacking route to the area I hunted last year for deer. My brothers and nephew will rely on me for scouting, planning and other information since I hunted there last year and I always take lead as the hunt coordinator for our group.

Need to get with my other bud for his archery elk trophy hunt, he has a few areas already planned out for us to scout.
