shot groups

Quick question:  you're shooting at 40yds, what is YOUR AVERAGE shot group size?  No ego, no fibbing, just put it out there for all the world to see!

Personally, I'm anywhere between 3-5 inches, depending on the day.

Also, what kind of shooting excerses do you do to try and tighten those groups?

Thanks - B

at 40 im inside 3 inches consistently im mostly touching at least two ta three of six  arrows i shoot at small targets usually a one inch square piece of painters tape i almost always hit  at least the edge of it

I used to shoot groups but that got too expensive. I like to shoot a 5x target set now and shoot for the x's. At 40 yards with a half dozen arrows I was in cowboys same boat.

yeah its cost me a few bucks in arrows to shoot like that lol at under forty i do the same i cant afford to shot the same bull anymore

I know I can improve, but at present I'm happy with minute of angle at 40 yards ie 4 inch group

I like the 1 inch per 10 yard base goal, i.e. 1"@10, 2"@20, 3"@30 and so on.  One major practice strategy I've adopted is similar to what Cam Hanes does.  Double your real life hunting distances and keep your groups in the vitals.  So if you are comfortable with a 55 yard max in the field, practice out to 110 yards and keep the sticks in the vitals.  It adds a great challenge to your practice routine and shooting a dozen at 100 yards makes 50 feel like a chip shot.

Yeah I love Cam he has some great philosophy's and if you can hit an 11"target at 110 yards you can kill most any big game. I like to be closer to the center but my dad used to say the same thing he would put up a paper  plate and we would shoot the middle out of it, but any stray arrows still in the plate he would always say its still a dead animal if you can hit a pie plate you can kill a deer or elk etc

I try to do the same thing. 1" per 10 yards. About as far as I can get here is 80 yds but after shooting that for a while 30 and 40 seem easy.

I typically shoot at 1" spots out to 60 yards, and I try to keep 4 arrows up against the spot if possible (about a 2" group). Stepping back and shooting at longer distances definitely improves aiming and form...the slightest deviation from form or release is magnified at the longer distances, and my groups tighten up considerably after a summer shooting out to 100. Here is a photo of my group from 80 yards from last week. I still have a little ways to go with my form and aiming, but my new Hoyt Faktor 34 is shooting great!

Aim small, miss small!

I would think I'm still sub 3", haven't had as much practice time as I once did, prior to moving to the city. I know and have been capable of producing under 2" pretty consistently, need to get back into a consistent shooting regiment .

Buglelk That is good shooting. I shoot out to 60 yards I will mess around here and there. My eyes are not what they use to be. So on animals Its only 50 yards or less. Over the years I have only shot one at 51 yards all the others have been 32 or under. I have a son that shoots out to a hundred all the time and he is a good shot. He says he does that for fun. He wont shoot at an animal over 50. Thats probably because he grow up hunting with me. I take that back, him and another one of my sons will try to shoot potguts out to 60-80yards. They put 20 bucks on who can hit it ;D

Here is 50 yd. group from this morning at 7 am. After getting home from working a 12 hour shift and 4 1/2 hours sleep in the last 42 hours. It was cool and calm so it felt like Sept. in Idaho. I thought this would be a good test for those long days chasing Elk and little sleep. This is the only group I shot. Not quite where I want it by Sept. but I am happy with it for this morning. Now off to bed.

If I can shoot minute of angle at my worst, then I'd be happy with a group like Heath's...that has to be a lot tighter than 5" at 50 yards.

Good shooting and good hunting

Heath not bad. I work graves I will have to try and shoot when I get home and see how I do.

Wow, Buglelk and SpotNstalk great shooting.  You guys are way better than me.

At 40yds, I'm in a 3-4" circle and 5-6" if its pretty windy.  Typically, I only shoot out to 60yds with any regularity.  I'd be scared to even release at 110, probably send my arrow into the next county.

I'm the same as you Arrows4Elk...I often shoot one-shot groups like these out to 60 yards and am happy with this benchmark, shooting Slick Trick Magnum 125s

You guys inspired me with your long distance shooting practices. I can definitely see the benefit of practicing that way.

I shot at 70 and 80yds (80 is the longest shot I have ever taken) this morning. 80 felt like a mile away, I'm just glad I hit the bag with all 6 arrows since I dont have a pin set for it. At 70yds, by my 5th round (6 arrows at a time) I was in a 10-12" circle...which is actually better than I thought I would do.

Thanks for sharing everyone, if it wasnt for this thread I'd probably never start practicing past 60yds.
