Tent/shelters

I was just looking at the Mountainsmith website, and they have a new shelter that looks real appealing. the Mountain Shelter LT.
2# and  54sqft all for $129.00

That thing is pretty sweet. big floor space and an interior height of 54 in the front and 40 in the back

I would suggest you buy a cheap poly tarp in the size you want and set it up in different configurations. One added piece that comes in handy is a plastic clip on, that will add another cord tie anywhere you need it along the edge. Many tarps do not space the holes or loops where one is needed.

I think I will try that, My sins boy scout troop is doing a "no-tent" camp-out in February, I think I will get a blue poly tarp and try some different setups.

But that mountainsmith mountain shelter has grabbed my attention.

We just sleep under the stars unless the weather is predicted to be bad then we take a tarp with us just in case we need to make a lean to.

msr has quite a few shelters in addition to all of their tents.  look pretty cool

Why can you buy an 6-8 person family person tent for 150.00, but a one person ultralight costs 400.00......something is twisted.

LOL you have to pay to cut pounds!  ;D

I like tarps too, especially for early season hunts.  I have a Kelty tarp that I've used in a lot of different configurations.  Even when it rains you can stay dry in it.  In this picture I have a small, packable cot set up that keeps me off the ground if there's a heavy rain.

And if all else fails, improvise.  My brother and I were on a 3 day bivy in the Gospel Hump in Idaho when we got caught one night in an unexpected rainstorm.  Came across an old, abandoned camp with lots of scrap wood and small logs laying around.  So, we made a lean-to out of what we could scrounge up and stayed pretty dry, all things considered.

srfost, thats a nice looking camp. The fire in front makes a big difference in camp.
just wondering what that packable cot weighs?
I am also quessing you had horses to pack it in?

Thanks nc, a guy can get pretty inventive when the alternative is sleeping in the rain. Not sure exactly what the cot weighs but it's probably about 3 1/2 lbs. And yes we packed in with horses but I've carried the cot on hike in pack trips too just because it makes sleeping so muchmore comfy.

I snagged a Eureka solitaire tent yesterday at the Eureka tent outlet online for $25.50, It is not my dream shelter, but for the price I couldn't pass it up.
it is better and lighter than the tent I used last year.
