What arrow is everyone shooting for an elk set up?

GT PP 250
496gn overall
Tipped with 125 slick trick standard
3 fletch blazer - offset
Bohning nock

Easton FMJs 400s with 50 grain brass HIT inserts and 100 grain Montec G-5 broadheads and three vain 3" Norway Fusion vanes for me.  Overall weight is ~450 grains and FOC is 12.5%.  They shoot good in the back yard, but haven't had the chance to sling one at an Elk yet.

This will be my first archery elk hunt but I set my whitetail setup up so I could hunt elk as well. I currently shoot Easton 5mm FMJ .300 spine with a 125 GR NAP Killzone. Total arrow weight is 540gr.

I am shooting the Easton Axis 340 5MM, with a 50 grain foc  and 100 grain slick tricks.
Also with a 3 degree twist. Really like the way they fly.

Would a 400 grain arrow be sufficient enough?

Obviously shot placement is key but if I was shooting 400 grains total weight, I would go with a 2 blade cut on contact fixed blade. If you get up above 450 I think you?d have more confidence shooting any quality head
Okay. I plan on using slick trick magnums. I use them for whitetail and love how they fly.

400 gr will work just fine, killed several with 390-400gr setups. If you like slick trick as do I, you may look at the slick trick Wicked Trick. That head is pretty stinking slick and leaves a nasty wound channel.

Hit nothing in or out, 15 yard shot stuck in the dirt. No rocks in the whole woods.
Hope they cover it. Emailed them yesterday and still haven?t heard anything.
Screwed my ViperTricks back on yesterday.
I love my Viper Tricks! You may want to look at the Wicked Trick head as well.

I shoot the carbon express maxima 350 with 100gr Slick Trick standards for a bit more penetration, but seen elk killed with the 100gr magnums. They do fly awesome!

Total weight of my set up is a little less than 400gr. I pull 70# bowtech destroyer 340 at 27? draw. I would measure your arrow speed and find out your kinetic energy, that will tell you if you are using a heavy enough set up for the speed of your arrow.

Clean pass through on an elk last year and a deer last year. Pic shows the arrow stuck in the ground after going through the deer. Ripped off my fletching though.

Good luck!

I went heavy this year and can?t wait to try them out. Daysix 250 will their 100 gr centric outsert and 125 gr Bone Broadhead. Still testing some different vanes but should come in right around 630 gr total.

30" Beman ICS Hunter 300, 4 blazer vane, 50 grn brass insert and 125 Slick Trick Standard...476 grain arrow.

Slick Trick recommends the standard for elk, to get deeper penetration.

27.5" GoldTip Hunter 340s - 50gr brass insert - three 3" vanes + 38grs of trimmer line pushing a 100gr Iron Will or Slick Trick = 465gr total

Hunter XT 340's with 100gr G5 Montec heads.

I have no idea what the weight of my arrows are. Should I be concerned? I've taken 2 elk with this setup so far, so it seems to be working. Although, those were both on G5 Striker heads now that I think about it. I swapped to Montecs for no particular reason but now I'm a little worried after watching the BRO crew's recent broadheads testing on YouTube. The Montecs weren't scoring as high as some of the others in their testing. Other's reviews of the Montecs are pretty good though, so I'm not convinced quite yet to spring for another $30-$50 set of broadheads.

I wouldn't be concerned at all. Nothing better to prove an arrow setup works than real life experience. And as far as the Montecs go, a ton of people shoot them successfully on elk, so I wouldn't be concerned there either.

There?s been how many ?broadhead test? through the years?!?  And with each one a different head every time...Least the ones that I have paid attention too!  Have products gotten better, sure just as other equipment has over the years...

Comes down to what you like and what works for your setup...The G5 Striker I shoot didn?t fair that well in the recent test, yet I?ve shot so many animals with them to include Elk and two Moose, I?m not changing...Even with the new V2!

Keep them sharp and spinning true, put it where it needs to go and even a chipped rock will work...
