what caliber

Scott I wouldn\'t let the recoil of the 300 detour you of getting one. A 300 win mag with a muzzle break or a good quality recoil pad will go a long was in helping with the recoil. I can easily shoot a box of shells out of my 300 with out feeling it in my shoulder. I have an older 30.06 that was given to me by my grandpa that puts a wallop on my shoulder when I shoot it compared to my 300. I think a lot also depends on the gun brand that you choose also. It seems like the new rage is to get the lightest gun possible which is great for carrying it miles and miles in the woods but that does not help when that same light gun beats you to death at the range because it only weighs 4lbs. With that being said I don\'t think you can go wrong with the trusty 30.06 it to is a great and proven caliber.
I shot a whole box of ammo on sunday..... I have a browning a-bolt with a muzzle break...... I does not kick as bad as my wifes short and light ruger .270!

My Browning A Bolt 300 WM does not have a muzzle break and it kicks like a mule. I use an extra pad when sighting in. In a hunting situation it should only be one shot maybe two. I can handle that. I plan on doing a lot more shooting with it next summer at long ranges. I might have to look into a Sims Recoil Pad or something similar to tame it down.

My tikka superlite 300wm puts a hurt on me every time I shoot it. The recoil pad helped but it still hurts. Next step is a muzzle break.

ok, so talk to me about a muzzle break. i know they thread on, but how do you find a rifle that has threads, or do you have to take it to a gunsmith. mossberg patriot has a model with a break on it, but reviews were not great.

Gunsmith...there is a guy in Colorado Springs that I\'m going to have do mine. Forget his name now I found him online and the reviews are all positive.

Yeah, gunsmith for a muzzle break. One suggestion for some of you who don\'t like the recoil: when you are target shooting, try shooting prone. I find that it really takes away a lot of the recoil compared to shooting off a bench. I never notice the recoil of my rifle in a hunting situation, but it\'s definitely noticeable when target shooting. When I first got my 300 RUM, I shot it off a bench and thought I was going to get rid of it...the recoil was brutal and there was no way I was going to do a muzzle break because my hearing is bad enough already. But shooting it prone, you have your whole body there to soak up the recoil instead of just your shoulder. Just throwing it out there!

I have a 300 WM, .270 WSM and a couple 30-06s. I\'m not recoil sensitive but of those four rifles the hardest kicking is the .270 WSM. It\'s a lightweight rifle and that\'s likely the reason. I wouldn\'t shy away from the 300 due to recoil, just make sure the rifle fits you well. I used to use mine for deer here in MO. As long as I stayed off the shoulder it didn\'t do anymore damage than an 06. I think I probably prefer my Savage 110 over all my rifles. I changed the stock to a thumbhole and bedded the action. I haven\'t stretched it out past 100 but it will cloverleaf. I guess the real reason I\'m fond of it is 06 ammo is the cheapest.
