What do you do?

The season is over for some of us.
Some were successful and others are having tag burning rituals.

My question to all of you is, what do you do now to remember the encounters or lessons you learned on your hunts?

Do you have a journal?
Do you jot them down in a notebook?
Do you have an elk playbook that you made?

I started a journal that I could write down stuff in the night they happen. That way I could have the most accurate details of the encounter and so I could analyze it properly later.
It\'s also something that I can read before next season so the information is fresh!

Anyone else have anything they?

I used to write everything down on a map ... giving me a \"bird\'s-eye\" view of the hunt and the memories.

Didn\'t do that this year ... I may have to get the map out next weekend and start jotting things down.

That is a great idea, John.
Thank you for the tip. :upthumb:

i dont and never have or will, but, i bet if a young guy would write down wind direction, temps, weather, dates, and couple that with elk sitings, hunting pressure, and whatever other factors you encounter, over 5-10 years you would get a eye opening view of your area instead of guess work and feelings.

I like to keep notes with maps of the area I hunted in case I make it back there. I have a carry file holder I toss anything important into so I know where to find it in the future.

I also keep this around for cooking in case I need it as seasons end.

Another thing i like to do is put my GPS way-points into Google Earth and save them there. Its really helpful for me to see all of them from the sky as it helps me see a bigger picture of things.

I take a ton of pictures. At least one every day. That way I can remember every encounter. I also write up my season to submit to either a magazine or online. I can look back at hunts day by day years past they occurred

Magazine?

Do you have stuff published, Will?

Like Brad, I post things of importance here. I often write them into magazine articles. Mostly the things learned are mulled over and over in my mind. Did I learn a new fact or was is an anomaly? How can I benefit from this information?
Sometimes I think it would be great to sit around a campfire with some of you and discuss things we have experienced. The great thing about a good campfire situation is; everyone is welcome to share their experiences and insights. Sometimes we can all discuss and just laugh at the experience, or we can learn from each other.

I can assure everyone that I can offer lots of experiences to laugh at. :D
I haven\'t even mentioned my graceful tumble I had out in Oklahoma yet that I caught on camera.

Turns out going down a grassy steep spot that is wet doesn\'t fair well for traction. :dk:

no. i\'m really really lazy.

i have several log books. same as the one i sent with Colt-the-Knife. waterproof, super durable, un-tearable.

(Dan if you want one, let me know), i have a buddy that keeps a fantastic journal. he even staples his signed tags, or unfilled tags onto the pages. super cool and organized. i need to do this.

The tag idea is kind of cool. Thanks, Cliff!

I have a few of those notebooks tucked away, I appreciate the offer!

I \"capture\" everything I can into a spreadsheet.

that spreadsheet contains:

list of stuff to take
daily meal plan (we assign dinner responsibility per man)
lessons learned (probably the handiest page in the spreadsheet)
\"pre-engineered\" hunt plans
hunt log, which tabulates critters seen, etc
log of how many miles I\'ve run this year, and daily weight
budget tab (dont let my wife see this)

and lots of other stuff. when I die, I expect my elk buddies to print a copy and bury it with me!

Shane,

another great recommendation.
I do like the idea of keeping track of camp meals and how much stuff I purchased.

What did I have enough of, what did I run out of type stuff.

Thank you all!
