Is there a piece of gear that DIDNT work, or live up to expectations this year?

Please share your experiences.

Hmmmmm

My outdoor edge knife did not live up to my expectations.
Granted, I was trying to cut up an elk absolutely covered in mud, but I just was not sold on it and I was scared a few times the thing was going to collapse or break.

I think the mud was the main reason, but I am very particular about the knife I use. (This knife was the outdoor edge razor model with interchangeable blades)
I\'ll probably just give it away in a contest.

While those interchangeable knife blades sound like a cool idea, I have never been sold on it because of exactly what you said Dan. It just doesn\'t look sturdy to me compared to a solid knife blade.

Dan, the next time you see Russ, take a look at his knife. I guarantee you his will do the job! Guess I\'m kinda partial to it. :shh:

:( :( My legs.. :( :(

I know they ain\'t gear but they are the most important think I use in hunting...

My elk calls just did not get the job done for me. I have some great sounding diaphragms from our sponsors, but the calls just were not enough to draw in the elk, from several hundred yards past the barbed wire, holding signs like those shown below. Darn diaphragms.

After 40+ years of doing this thing called hunting, I\'ve weeded out the crap that just doesn\'t cut it. I might get snuck up on every now & then by a new bell or whistle but not this year. Everything performed well. Even the 3 year old diaphragms I possess . If you look close at the pic of my little \" chronically wasted\" elk, you can clearly see one of those fences you speak of Swede. Every year we seem to coax a critter onto our side. I will be contacting some of our sponsors in regard to those dirty old calls tho.

Dave, the area where the elk hang out on the ranch is wide open field. The picture of the no trespassing sign is on a Forest Service road. I believe the ranch uses it to keep the uninformed off public roadways.
To get to the ranch fence, the elk are behind, you need to cross at least 200 yards of open sage country 90+% of the time. There are a few spots with a hill for cover.
The elk will answer from over 1/4 mile away if you call. Still, I think it is possible to entice one to check a hunter out where and when they can get close. The ranch people drive very near to them in the fields, and they don\'t spook easily.
I would like to get JF to come help get one or two. I believe we could scheme and develop a workable strategy.

Swede: In Colorado a rancher can be fined for posting public land. I\'ll bet your state is the same.

WW, you are right on target. I notified the F.S. Ranger who has notified me that law enforcement has been contacted about the matter.
Some people don\'t know what is open and what is not, so the ranch eliminates use by hunters.

The Silvies Valley Ranch Corporation routinely uses their clout, i.e. $$$ to advance their business holdings. Shouldn\'t surprise anyone that spends any time in and around the Silvies Valley. I\'ll bet their dang cattle have been moved off government land by now. Rifle season begins on Saturday.

I did not have one to try this year, but Stringunner\'s dad showed me a cheap gut hook. Yesterday I went into Malwart and got a package of Stanley hooked blades for the common box cutter. Stringunner\'s dad, Glen says it works well, and it looks like it sure will. I am looking forward to giving it a try.
This may sound rather narrow minded and one way, but don\'t bother to call me for assistance, or a demonstration on your next elk, if you live in Colorado.

I bought a new bugle this year to replace the one I\'ve been using forever which my dog (then puppy) chewed up. I\'m reluctant to say who made this new bugle but it is an absolute gimmick; looks like something you might win at an arcade and amplifies bugles about as well as a set of cupped hands. It never made it out of my living room and I\'ll toss it in as one of the contest \"prizes\".

Will, buddy: If it is garbage please just throw it away. Garbage is no prize.

\"OR elk sniper\" said:
Will, if it\'s garbage you need to throw out a name so no one else wastes their money on it.
I\'m in agreement with Sniper. However I think one mans openon doesn\'t necessarily make or break a product. But if something really sucks, it wouldn\'t hurt to at least let others know. If you don\'t want to go public, how about a PM? I would like to know as well.

Pms sent. As for the \"prize \" comment, I just thought maybe someone else would see some value in the tube

I didn\'t have any problems with gear this year. Everything was pretty solid fortunately.

I will be picking up a new chest rig for bino\'s and other items. I hate carrying a bunch of stuff in my pant pockets.

The one piece of gear I did pick up that worked well was my load strap for my KUIU pack. It worked well.
