What type gear didnt work this year?

My \'modified\' bugle failed on me this year.

I used an E.L.K mouth reed attached to a Chuckler tube and for some reason the white bands just stopped working.
I had to change them out in the middle of a bugling battle but to no avail!

I ripped off the mouthpiece and used a diaphram for the rest of the season...

Dan,

I just use some 550 cord long enough it will wrap around my opposite shoulder to my hip. Not perfect but works well.

I also like to use snap rings and hook one to a belt loop or pack for keeping gps or rangefinder secure.

Aaron,

That is a great idea. I have a bunch of 550 cord that I can build something out of.
I also ordered a new range finder with a pocket clip on it :problem:

Ready to take some nice OK whitetail?? I know I am!

The lost rangefinder rings a bell with me also. Earlier this year one of my hunting buddies wanted me to check my gear to see if he had misplaced his in some of my stuff on last years elk hunt. I went through everything with no luck. He was sure he had lost it on the hunt. Made a trip to cabelas for a new one. While packing his gear for this years hunt, he reached under his bed to retrieve his hunting boots & guess what he pulled out.LOL! He now has a spare. I\'ve used a tether with a small carabiner to clip mine to my belt for years. Have had it fall out on more than one occasion, but know it instantly. Tether it long enough to easily reach your eye. Equally as important is to put your stuff up when returning from the hunt....don\'t just kick it under the bed.. :haha:

I had two things fail this Season, but it\'s really because I wore them out. Can\'t really complain, I got good mileage out of both.

I have a bow hook that hangs off my pack shoulder strap, I\'ve had it for 4 years. Wore clear through the fabric on the end, and the metal insert fell out. Tried some field repairs on it and gave up.

Also, my Knight and Hale external reed call fell apart (reed came out). I\'ve been using this call for probably ten years. I was able to execute a field repair on it, and super glue it back in, and still get a decent tone out of it.

I always carry Gorilla Super Glue...I used it as a skin closure on some slices I got on my fingertips this year that were driving me nuts. Worked well.

Can\'t really think of any other gear failures.

I have used para cord or stretch cord on my range finder for years.
Depending on the hunt, I loop it over my shoulder and it hangs just above my right hip.
Use it and let it go.

Other times I carry it in my right side cargo pocket with the tether looped to my belt.

My GPS also has a tether on it that is attached to my pack.
And I make it a point not to go anywhere without my pack :)

I think a tether will be the best bet!!!! Especially the way I move in the mountains and woods.....
Sometimes I get a little over anxious and when I start sprinting a ridge to cut a distance, stuff just disappears from my pockets :downthumb:

I really like the gorilla glue idea, Jeff.
I will have to make note of that :upthumb:

Dan,

Yep, I\'m ready. I\'m flying to Dallas for meetings in early November then driving up to Oklahoma to meet with EmbryOklahoma (Rick Embry) to hunt our old stomping grounds for about 5 days. New moon at that time and the bucks should be on their feet!

I used the E.L.K. bugle many years ago. It is a great call with outstanding sound especially for guys that can\'t use a diaphragm. Sounds like the problem you had was from spitting up the bands. For sure you need to pack extra bands for this call. By the way, it is also one of the best coyote howlers on the market.

The single pole on the GoLite ShangriLa 5 failed in very high winds (40-50mph gusts) on my brother\'s tent. He used his tripod as a tentpole for the rest of the trip. I have the same tent, and during that windstorm, we had to lash my trekking poles to my tentpole and it held during an early rifle deer hunt where we were camped around 12,000\' with no trees for protection. The tent is a good tent for the right applications - it just has limitations with wind. We used my SL5 again a week later on my buddy\'s archery elk hunt in CO and it was fine. I will keep using this tent, just not in areas where I know there will be high wind.

i\'m not loving my BlackDiamond headlamp. i cant remember the exact model. \"SPOT\"??

the on/off button is very very \"tender\". meaning anything pushes against it, and it turns on. i find it on in my backpack all the time. i have a dead battery when i need it situation in the making.

i think i am over REI headlamps. i\'m at the \"go big or go home\" place now :D

I just bought one of those Cliff...and I\'m already not liking it. I want something with a GOOD red light. Guess I\'m going to have to cough up more than thirty bucks :dk:

I use a Primos Top Gun... It a pretty good headlight and has a red filter on it.. I\'ve never used the filter but it look like it just slides or swings up in place over the light.. It\'s kind of bright but that\'s what I need for what I use if for. Here a link for one on ebay and you can look at it and check around for better price... I think I paid less that $30 when I bought mine a few years back...

Looks like a good idea...the red filter has to be brighter than those little LED dots! Thanks, Phil.

Jeff and Cliff, I have an older Petzl Tikka with a red filter lens that flips down over the white LEDs and seems to work pretty well. This link is to one similar. I don\'t recall if mine only has 3 LEDs or more.

I really like the little head lights that clip on the bill of my hat. (Just another good reason to wear a ball cap, Dan) They are $5 or less at Cabelas and you don\'t have to mess with that elastic head band. They are plenty good for use around camp or walking in before daylite.
