i got bored and ran your numbers from what you\'ve told me at elk camp. i thought youd be interested your getting 94.44KE. that\'s a lot higher than i thought it would be with your \"lighter\" arrow

i hear ya jeremy, i would love to have the carbon spyder turbo 33 inch. that bow is calling my name

I think arrow weight gets way over blown. (Sorry to burst your 600 gr bubble) :) Tuned bow + tuned arrows/broadhead + tuned shooter = dead elk every time. I can\'t say enough about my broadhead of choice either. COC head that flies like a dart!

I should run your momentum. then youd see where heavy is better than faster. :D Energy = .5 * weight * velocity2 ya see in the formula speed gets multiplied 2 times. it could also be wrote out as energy = ,5 x weight x (speed x speed) if my algebra is right.?.

if you like we could get into the skinny shaft size vs the bigger shaft debate as well

JJ
Look at my post from Saturday. I posted some different arrow weights and speeds
Let me know your thoughts

Thanks!

I think KE and momentum concerns are way overblown unless you\'re hunting rhinos, hippos, elephants, or cape/water buffalo.

A perfectly-tuned arrow with a sharp broadhead shot accurately at a comfortable draw weight is far more important than worrying about ft/lbs.

but its the off season and not even close to elk season, what else are we to debate? besides what if I want a setup to hunt cape buffalo, I cant afford it but I still want the setup :D

I don\'t believe you guys for a minute. not a single newest latest greatest bow on this list. you all know you have to have that to kill. lol, jk
mine is a hoyt crx with the old fuel cam on it. bought it new after they discontinued them for a great price, but its two generation old tech. the elk I killed last year didn\'t seem to mind much.
its 64 lbs, 28.5 in draw lenth, shooting bloodline arrows with slick trick heads. had to put a drop away on it to get it to tune, miss my wb.
All right fine! 2014 hoyt carbon spyder 30\" 70lb , 2014 spot hogg boss hogg 3 pin, easton axis n fused 29\" w/100gr nap thunderhead edge total weight 400gr, shooting around 290fps I think, never shoot it through a chronograph.

Go ahead and run them JJ. It still won\'t change my 390gr arrow set up :) at 40 yards my arrow is still gaining momentum :) or at least that is the perception after the arrow blows thru an elk at 40 yards and the arrow travels another 30-50 yards past. ;)

JJ, as long as the shooter is capable of shooting a super-heavy setup accurately, I\'m 100% in favor of it. If you\'re good with super-heavy and honestly feel you\'re at your peak performance with your setup, that\'s awesome.

I see way too many guys at the range trying to follow that advice and can barely get their compounds back without \"sky-crawing\", and hear about how they couldn\'t get to full draw on animals at the moment of truth. Trad guys who think they need to be overbowed/over-arrowed have terrible issues with accuracy, when if they\'d drop down to the mid-50\'s and shoot 400-500 grain arrows they\'d reduce their margin of error, minimize trajectory, and be much more effective hunters and shooters

Back when I was guiding elk rifle hunters, the outfitter insisted on our hunters shooting super-magnum rifles, even though they were mostly Texas whitetail hunters used to .270s, 7mms, etc. When we took them on the range with the big magnums they\'d brought, some of them flinched badly, some couldn\'t hit a paper plate at 100 yards. The outfitter claimed a magnum would perform better with a marginal shot.

Well, we did have a lot of marginal shots with those big guns, for sure. Some guys flat missed elk at 70 yards because they were closing their eyes or flinching, yanking the trigger. I told the outfitter I\'d much rather have my hunters shooting their .270s and .7mms that they could shoot accurately, and we had a huge argument about it. So the wounding and bad shots continued. I quit guiding for him (not entirely for that reason, he was also a lying, law-breaking sack of scum.)

Lou, I agree with you 100%. ive talked people out of getting a heavy speed bow for there first bow. over bowed can be detrimental for a new shooter. I try and advise people who are just getting into the game to get a mainline bow that wont brake the bank and give them a solid beginning. as for me I thought about what you said about sky crawling to draw your bow. I recorded myself drawing my bow. it looked smooth and level the whole time. I was just wondering what my form looked like with this bow. thanks for the post, got me thinking a little. and to be honest, I do feel like ive peeked in performance with this bow.

After many years I retired my Martin Phantom and bought a Bowtech Experience last spring. Here\'s the specs

Draw length = 26.5\"
Draw weight = 73lbs\"
Arrow weight = 458 gr
Arrow length = 28\"
Arrow speed = 268fps
KE = 73

The arrows I shoot are easton axis 340s with 125gr montecs with 2\"blazers. I buy the bare shafts and build them.
The bow is outfitted with a smackdown rest, AXT single pin sight and octane quiver.
The bow is quiet and smooth. I can\'t shoot it enough :D!

Pipsqueak chiming in here...

2010 Martin Crossfire, barebow, DL=25.5\", DW=46#
I\'m waiting til after turkey season to start setting up elk-weight arrows and broadheads. Plus, if I can shoot my 47# Bear Grizzly recurve by mid-summer, I\'ll set up elk arrows for that bow instead.

I\'m shooting my mathews helium! Absolutely love it! Have a spott Hogg 7 pin sight qad drop away rest and I\'m shooting easton injexion 400s cut to 26 1/2. Depending on the critter I\'m shooting on the broadhead. I\'ve been shooting deep six slice fixed blade. Going to try the qad fixed blade this yr. have my bow set on 64lbs. Not sure of the ke and all that but it chrono at 301fps :thewave:
