Where Do You Carry Your Bow?

Having always hunted with a rifle, my gun is always either slung on my shoulder or in my hands if I\'m in a tight spot where a quick shot could present itself. Switching over to a bow has me curious: how do you all carry your bow? Do you have it strapped on your pack until you anticipate an encounter or set up to call? Or is it always in your hands ready to go?

unless im walking in several miles to where im gonna hunt through terrain that likely does not hold elk, i always carry my bow. and i dont use the backpack quivers. i want my stuff where i can get to it.

I use a Primos sling when covering country that holds elk but not hunting. If I\'m packing in I will strap it to my pack where I don\'t have access to it but it rides easier and I have both hands free. In elk country I carry it...usually by the string.

Sorry Dan, but I suppose I\'m one of those people that thinks you are nuts. LOL! Here are two reasons why.

1) I sure hope you don\'t fall on that arrow while you are moving around.

2) Did you ever stop and think that as you are walking with that arrow on the string, every time you hit weeds or brush you are dulling that razor edge??

Personally, I have a home made sling that I never use. My bow is always in hand in what ever configuration is the most comfortable and all my arrows are in the bow quiver at the time. Sometimes I hold it by the riser. Other times by the string. And sometimes over my shoulder. But I never have an arrow on the string. Not even when I\'m doing a setup. It is a challenge when I see a bull coming to get the arrow loaded up before he sees me. Guess I\'m just slow and easy going. I never get excited. So doing it this way is how I add a little spice to the hunt. Never had one spook on me yet. :tease:

Mine is always in hand and I never carry it by the string. Likely overthink things but carrying it by the string could cause things to stretch and accuracy to be affected

day in and day out, I am carrying my bow. I do carry a sling for when I need both hands, but I haven\'t had to use it yet..... dan, you are nuts by carrying a stick on your string all day long!

I always use to carry my bow but never nocked an arrow until I was setup, be looking over a wallow or in a tree stand... If I stopped for a rest and set down I would nock an arrow while setting and lay the bow across my lap or on the ground beside me...

Dan and my oldest son are both crazy...

I have a primos sling that I\'ve used on long hikes where I don\'t anticipate any action, but for the majority of the time it\'s over my shoulder positioned so the string won\'t be in contact with me too much. I don\'t want any unnecessary wear on it & that\'s exactly why I seldom Cary it by the string. It\'s as natural to me as carrying a rifle or shotgun over my shoulder. Unless I\'m stalking something close, I don\'t have an arrow on the string while moving. I had the misfortune of hunting with a guy who did & the hunt was shortened when he inadvertently touched my string with his broad head. Had the schlidt slapped out of me when it came undone! If I\'m setting for any period of time, an arrow is always on the string.

Bow is in my hand unless I\'m doing a very very long hike then I will pull out the Primos sling.

I should note, when I am sprinting and working NASTY terrain, I take the arrow out.
Other than that I have it knocked and cocked!

Bill, you are right about the broad head catching on stuff.
I have to be extra careful when navigating around thicker stuff. I also cannot use mechanicals because it\'ll open them up if I am not paying attention.

Just be careful...I had a buddy this yer fall while climbing a decent hill, slip and sever his nerve in between his thumb and pointer finger. It\'s happened in October and he is just now able to shoot!!

I always carry my bow in hand when hunting. If backpacking in, I will lash the bow to my pack by the riser - I take caution not to put any straps around the string or cables, as I don\'t want them to wear while hiking in for miles. In my hand I usually carry it by the handle, but sometimes by the string.

I\'m like Dan sometimes. When I am still hunting, I always have an arrow on the string. Arrow gets put in the quiver when going over rough terrain, moving quickly and steep slopes.

Carrying the bow is the major pain of bowhunting.

\"Knocked and cocked\" ... I have to remember that one!

Like WW, I\'ve made a homemade sling ... which I never use. I carry by the grip, or by the cables.

I have a sling that just covers my cams but I only really use it in the morning when I have a long way to go in the dark.

Most of the time I carry it by the brace behind the handle on my Hoyt.

I use a sling before daylight and after dark. Other than than that by the handle. Rarely have an arrow on the string because I\'m so clumsy and don\'t want to be that guy who falls victim to his own broadhead.

I carry mine by the handle most of the time. I will also carry it by the lower cam in my hand and rest the limb in the pocket of my elbow with the string facing away from me. This is comfortable and does not stress my hand much as I don\"t have to maintain as firm of a grip. On hikes in and out during the darkness and on bike rides I strap it to my pack.

i carry my bow unloaded.

i have a friend that stabbed another friend with a montec when one guys suddenly stopped. ouch.

and i am not jump shooting anything with a bow. if i have time to range, aim, shoot..i have time to load an arrow. for me the game is all about seeing the animal before it sees me anyways. (same with a rifle, unchambered for safety..i almost died in my teens at the hands of my brother) carrying a bow blows. you have to keep changing hand positions. dangle from the string, the grip, the grip backwards..bow over your shoulder..it all sucks. part of the romance i suppose.

the part that i hate is putting it down for a quick glass of the binos.

I like to have mine in my hand knocked and ready to go as long as the terrain isn\'t to dangerous.

I have a couple reasons for this
The first year I was hunting I had my bow strapped to my pack and somehow a tree limb grabbed my bowstring derailing it making it useless the rest of the hunt.
Same year with the bows on our packs we walked up on a bull at 30 yards and a separate occasion walked up on a cow and a calf at 40 yards. We had no chance at getting our bows in time for a shot at the bull but the cow we could have but chose to pass. If we had our bows in our hand I think we would have had a chance at the bull.
