Your Scariest Experience

It is almost Halloween, so lets talk. If you have the nerve, describe the scariest experience you have had in the forest, especially out elk hunting.

I have three that vary in scope, but were all difficult or scary at the time. I will try to put them in order of the scariest.

1. This was the time I fell from my tree stand. I landed on my head and shoulders. I was unconscious for over 1/2 hour. When I regained minimal consciousness, I did not know where I was, who I was with or what I was doing. I looked around and was confused. Fortunately I could see my truck off in the distance and it slowly started coming back. I wanted Luke, then it dawned on me that he was nowhere near. I slowly walked out to the truck and things seemed to return to my mind. I remembered I had to go pick up the fellow I was hunting with. Fortunately he was out and waiting for me. I got him to drive me home. I felt sick to my stomach. When I arrived at the house I told my wife what happened and went to bed. I was not hungry and just turned in. She kept telling me to go get checked out at the hospital, but I reassured her. I knew she was right, but I just needed to rest.

2. A friend and I hiked about six miles back into an un-roaded area. Then we split up. I hunted in one direction while he went another. We wanted to cover as much ground as possible. It was late rifle elk season, and was going to get dark early. After hiking around all day, I thought I knew the way out, but was unsure. I was unprepared to stay the night. I knew that was a bad move on my part. I looked around and headed out. It would soon be getting dark and I had a long hike ahead. I went as fast as I could in the direction I had picked. After going about two miles down hill, I hit a Forest Service trail. It looked like the one I wanted, but I was very unsure. Still it felt good and it was heading down. As dark settled in I just had enough light to stay on the trail. With no time to spare, I saw the light of camp and a good fire was burning. I felt great. I was on top of the world. I could not thank the Lord enough.

3. It was dark, and I was hiking back to the truck from my tree stand. Just down the draw from where I was, about 100 yards away, I heard the craziest, most awful howling or screaming, I ever heard in the woods. I stopped, unsure if I should run get back in my stand, or stay put. To this day I have no idea what made those long awful sounds. They continued on for several minutes and just stopped. I got back to the truck and quickly drove off. The next morning I went back to look the area over, but saw nothing unusual.

Happy Halloween.

Last year, mid summer, scouting alone, my friend Swede shared the location of a water hole near a creek down, straight down, in the bottom of a canyon, I went in search to find it. Didn\'t find it on this trip and chose to hike straight up trying to find the fastest way to the truck. I was exhausted after hiking straight up. The last 20 feet was a rock ledge that looked climable
, instead of walking to try and find a place to hike up, I decided to climb the rock face. Mid way up I looked down, wrong move. My pack was heavy and I got a bit nervous. Gritted my teeth and made another step up and reached with my right arm as high I could to get a hold of a rock....the rock gave way and fell scraping my arm and side pretty good. A bunch more rocks started falling. Praise be to the Lord, my left hand hold stayed in place. When the rocks stopped falling there wasn\'t much left on my right side to grab hold onto. Had to scale over a few feet and keep going up. Nothing else I could do. I was very happy to get to the top. I found a better way in this year after talking to Swede a few more times about how to go in and out. No elk there though this year.

Another one....a few years ago it was dark, I had parked at the end of a dead end road to make a phone call, mid way into the call, a truck came up behind me and parked. I told my wife I didn\'t know what the driver wanted but it looked like he was getting out to talk to me. I got a bit nervous not knowing who it was. I told my wife to hang on but I would keep the phone in my hand incase it was trouble....after the conversation was over (he was friendly enough) I got back on the phone, my wife said she couldn\'t hear anything but asked me who it was and what he wanted... My response, remember that book I have been studying for two years about how to hunt Rocky Mountain elk from a tree stand, she says yes, I said you are never going to believe this but it was the author!

Several year ago I was hunting a new area. I had been in there most of the day and had started my way back to the truck. I was probably about 1/2 mile from the truck on a steep mountain side above it. All of a sudden, the whole mountain started spinning. I mean really spinning fast and hard. I was loosing my balance and reached out to grab a near by quaky tree in order to keep from falling down. I put a bear hug around that tree and hung on until the spinning sensation finally stopped. I have no idea how long it lasted. But finally when things settled down, I noticed I had absolutely no hearing in my right ear. I didn\'t know if I could make it off the mountain side or even drive myself home for fear the spinning would start again. To make a long story shorter, a week or so later I made an appointment with a ear, nose, and throat specialist and he said I had a severe sinus infection and my right side was completely plugged, causing pressure on my ear drum from the inside, thus causing loss of equal Librium (sp) and hearing on the right side. It took sinus surgery and a whole lot of draining to correct the problem.

I have no idea what kind of medication they put me under with but I woke up four days later. Guess I don\'t handle drugs very well. LOL! The good thing about it was when I finally woke up I thought, \"Wow! I haven\'t had a cigarette in 4 days and I\'m still alive\"! I haven\'t smoked since and that was over 30 years ago.

Stringunner, I remember going up over that same rock face. It made me nervous, but I was late for a dinner date with my wife and a couple that were waiting. It was late, so there was no looking back. I got over it just fine that day. On another day I fell backward off the rock face above Rub. That was scary too. Just like with your experience, the rock I held onto broke lose. I had forgot about that little incident.
I have forgotten about the meeting you describe. I obviously was not concerned, so it did not affect me the same, but you are wise to be careful. I believe the Lord has definitely watched over me through the years. I stopped and talked to hundreds of Forest visitors when I worked for the Forest Service. Not everyone in the forest is out there with good intentions. The State police has calculated a very large percent of the people in the Forest have felony convictions. We were told that while I still worked for the F.S. I just don\'t remember the percent of the people out there that have the convictions.

WW, good for you. Even though the incident was scary at the time, it sounds like it turned out great in several ways. Congrats on quitting smoking. Many people have a very hard time giving up.

I don\'t have much mountain lion experience. So when I showed up at my spot an hour before sunrise and found a cat had shown up 56 minutes before I hit my stand.....that got me a little nervous......

I accidentally snuck up on a mountain lion that was stalking the same herd of elk in heavy timber. We had a very tense showdown at 10 feet, each waiting for the other to make a move. Because of the deadfall I couldn\'t back out. I was pinned-in. He was angry, ears back and tail twitching. I had only a longbow.

I talked, yelled, waved my arms, raised my bow and jacket, but in his mind I was the aggressor. I finally had to turn my back to climb out. When I turned back around he was gone. Five minutes later I shot the herd bull. Never saw the cat again but I\'m pretty sure he saw me.

That wasnt as scary as being chased and hunted by a cow moose, which happened while wearing a full pack on a training hike.

I didn\'t hunt elk long enough to be scared and as far as I know or remember I\'ve never been scared while hunting in the woods... Knock on wood...

Now while working is a different story which would take way to long to tell... :shh: :shh:

Just one of many.... Answered a disturbance call by myself and no backup available... At that time I was a tall skinny kid... Me and a guy twice my size had a disagreement about if he was going to kill a guy that was messing with his wife... I figured I was toast but me and Mr Smith talked us out of a tough situation without damage to anyone... ;) ;)

I\'m glad I\'m not working now as times and things have changed....
